Given how the UK CAA has made a statement so quickly, gives one the impression that TUA has been on the SAFA inspection 'radar' in the UK for a while.

The CAA acted after the EASA suspended permission for it to fly in the EU. It also flies from Frankfurt and Paris. The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said EASA had suspended the airline's flights to and from the EU "pending confirmation that it meets international air safety standards"."This means that Turkmenistan Airlines flights between the UK (London Heathrow and Birmingham) and Turkmenistan (Ashgabat), do not have permission to travel to and from the UK," the FCO said.

Note: have not found it on the EASA website yet though... search on Turkmenistan Airlines only provides old links and docs...

Question from a layman; does this ban them from operating to/from UK airports, or ban them from overflying UK airspace? May be a moot point but just idle curiosity.

I wonder whether it is related to SAFA findings or something else? Industry media has reported some changes a few days ago in Turkmenistan on government level with new ministry being created and control/oversight of Turkmenistan Airlines is transferred to this new ministry. It may have caused a confusion in regards to whether Turkmenistan CAA and Turkmenistan Airlines are being independent of each other - just a guess?

The airlines on the SAFA list are "banned from EU skies".

Which of course won't necessarily include UK airspace post-Brexit

Yebbut they would have to go a very long way round to fly from the UK to Turkmenistan without entering EU airspace.

BBC - Banned Turkmenistan Airlines leaves thousands stranded... Can't post a link but it's at www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-47115732 Apparently Turkmenistan operated to Amritsar and New Delhi from Heathrow and Birmingham. The Amritsar route is "popular with the British Punjabi population". CAA suggests making alternative arrangements with BA, Air India, Turkish Airlines etc.
