Classy, restrained, distinctive liveries back then. BOAC, Pan Am, TWA, JAL and others. BA should reinstate the Speedbird widget.
Now liveries are too gaudy, like a three year old with crayons. Some look like toothpaste tubes, (American)?

Referring to the 742 that was repainted.
I'd say that then, as now, it all gets written off on the PR budget.

When I was working in IT in a fancy London West End department store, the budget for the main window dressing seemed limitless. They were changed every six weeks thoughout the year and no one ever questioned. For us, in the backroom, trying to get funding for new IT (1980s) it was always an uphill stuggle. They said the windows brough the customers in and our point that we made the store function and service the customers was ignored. When I did a contract for a major UK High Steet chain in the 1990s? Same story.

G-AWNA is without doubt a 747-136. I have flown it many times, but not in those colours.
In addition, some airlines (including BA in the late 1970s) modified their early aircraft, which involved replacing the skin panels as can be seen on this NW B741:

As the British Airways we know today was formed by the merger of BOAC and BEA in 1974 it is reasonable to have a short haul aircraft painted in BEA colours as well as a long haul aircraft in BOAC colours.
Given that we know 3 747s and one A319 will go retro, I suspect that as well as the BOAC 747, we'll see the Landor and Negus schemes on the other two Boeings and (hopefully!) the BEA Red Square on the Airbus.

But I agree that a retro livery has the most impact when applied to a type that has never worn it.
Maybe BA will have more imagination than we give them credit for - imagine a 747 in either of the two schemes (white tail/blue tail) that the Stratocruisers, Britannias, etc, wore.
