A "good" landing (one you can walk away from.) Looks like they were holding to deal with a mechanical problem (gear? flaps?) that they couldn't resolve, and finally made the best touchdown they could. Left the runway and dropped left engine (not necessarily in that order).

(Yes, the flaps appear to be down - but how far?)

Anyway, all will be revealed eventually.

I disagree. Looks like they went around for weather on the first try and did not report any problem to the tower on the second attempt.

Check out the 1530Z tower tape at liveatc.net for both approaches:

Media statement from the Manila International Airport Authority:

MIAA-CAAP JOINT STATEMENT

August 17, 2018 - On or about 2355H 16 August 2018, Xiamen Air flight MF8667 went off the runway during heavy downpour. All 157 passengers and flight crew are safe. Investigators from the CAAP Aircraft Accident Investigating Bureau is already on site to determine the cause of the accident.

Passengers were evacuated using the aircraft's emergency chute and were brought to NAIA Terminal 1 where they are now being assisted by airline and Miaa personnel. Blankets and food were provided by the airline. As of press time, passengers are being transported to a nearby hotel until operations of Xiamen Air resumes.

MIAA GM Ed Monreal and CAAP DG Jim Sydiongco are personally coordinating with the airline officials while supervising recovery and clearing operations on site.

Responding units from MIAA are Fire and Rescue, Medical, Operations, Safety and Airport police.

Due to the incident, NAIA'S international runway 06/24 is closed until 12 noon today.

A notice to airlines has been issued advising them about the closure. Passengers of affected flights are advised to closely coordinate with their airlines for announcements.

Folks,
My condolences to the tec. crew, and a treacherous runway strikes again would be my guess, in pretty difficult met. conditions.
I know this runway all too well.

Looks to me based upon the purported touchdown video and the end result, that they may have omitted to lower the UC.
