Infact all cadet controller now have to get at least a PPL, so at least they have primary knowledge of how tasking flying can be..

Pilot suspended:
Kabo Airlines has suspended its pilot who disobeyed Air Traffic Control to land its B747 in an alternate runway resulting in damage to aircraft and Instrumemt landing system (ILS) at Sokoto Airport last Friday.
This was disclosed in Abuja, Tuesday, by the Director-General of Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Fola Akinkuotu during an interactive session with journalists.
The Kabo plane was conveying 512 passengers from Kano Airport, to Saudi Arabia with a stopover in Sokoto.
The pilot did not comply with the directive given by air traffic controller on duty that the plane should land on runway 08 , but rather diverted to another runway.

Any reason as to why he chose to land Rw 26 as against 08? I know 08 has an ILS and for 26 its a visual approach.

We went around but were then berated by air traffic control for not having obeyed their instructions 'Why did you not land when ordered'!
It's a different world.

Something similar happened to me at Kano one dark night in a DC10. We were cleared to land by the approach controller and at the end of the landing run were told to change to the tower for taxi instructions. The tower berated us for not getting landing clearance from him, and refused to give us taxi instructions until we asked him for landing clearance!!
