I really hope we get to to see actual "company issued" memos on here.

I must commend John for standing up against the tyrants that are Ryanair.

Shame how whistleblowers always seem to get punished!

My understanding is that a Mayday, Mayday, Mayday Fuel call is made if you will not have the full reserve fuel left from landing at the nearest suitable airport. Therefore, if there is a suitable airport closer to you than destination and you can see that you will have 1 minute less than reserve fuel at destination, you don't declare a Mayday but land at the nearer suitable airport.

From ICAO Amendment 36 to ICAO Annex 6 Part I:4.3.7.2.3 The pilot-in-command shall declare a situation of fuel emergency by broadcasting MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY, FUEL, when the calculated usable fuel predicted to be available upon landing at the nearest aerodrome where a safe landing
can be made is less than the planned final reserve fuel.

After the previous 'silencing' of certain posters on here....might be a good thing that C4 have now joined in with their much more widely seen 'information' ? C4 is a much bigger fish to reel in than than a few innocent tiddlers on here..

Shocking (but not totally unsurprising) news about Captain John Goss, dismissed with immediate effect after 26 years with Ryanair and within 2 months of his retirement.

Ryanair is also taking legal action against him apparently:-

HALLO-OH UK CAA? ANYBODY OUT THERE?!?!

"He added: “My personal belief is that the majority of Ryanair pilots do not have confidence in the safety agencies and that is a pretty critical issue.”"

And how many "G-registered" professional pilots have confidence in the UK CAA SRG, or EASA or whomsever is supposed to be at the helm this week?!?!

Despite being informed repeatedly via confidential reports, the UK CAA SRG still fails to take effective, positive and permanent action against any UK operator who abuses the FTLs scheme, or overloads its ground engineers with excessive tasking or allowing underqualified technicians to work unsupervised on public transport aircraft. The only response we receive are mealy-mouthed quotes regarding the verbiage in the appropriate publication.

So I fear it's not just the IAA who need a kick up the !

John Goss is restoring in me some sort of confidence in the pilots' ability to act less as poor miserable victims and more as sensible adults with balls.

Ryanair has turned into the evil of air transport.

It is worrying how many people seem to have no problem with a business which has both appalling customer relations and even worse industrial relations in the name of shareholder dividends and lower* fares.

'Shut up or go work somewhere else' is not an attitude which engenders a good safety culture in any business, let alone aviation.

(*how much cheaper are Ryanair flights in reality? They trade on the 'we are cheaper than anyone else' mantra, but that is simply not true)

Barkingmad has hit the nail on the head; the UK CAA has a responsibility for oversight of ALL CAT operations in the UK regardless of the State of registry.

However, as we all now know, the UK CAA has become a rudderless, ineffectual organisation of time-serving individuals who, apart from a small and reducing number of exceptions, are unemployable elsewhere due to a fatal combination of lack of experience and lack of knowledge.

I know, a predictable response, but derived from very close contact with most of the SRG, especially over the last 5 years. I know many who have quit in disgust, especially in the Airworthiness side of things but also in Aerodromes, and I know just how bad are those who oozed their way into the shoes they cannot fill.

So don't look to the UK CAA for any action over Ryanair's operations in the UK, even if it were necessary. Last time I was involved, Ryanair's maintenance standards were extremely high, for very sound financial reasons at least, whether or not their Flight Ops management is questionable.

A bit of a paradox really. The Ryanair pilots are complaining about safety culture while undertaking the very work allegedly being the root of unsafe practice.
Obviously pilots working for Ryanair, thus accepting these standards, should not be confused with professionals.

Rubbish!

The fact that the vast majority of them are complaining about it shows that they are not accepting it.

Would you call a junior doctor who is falling asleep on his feet at 3.00am unprofessional for undertaking the work?

I'm not sure complaining really counts for anything on its own.

If it's unsafe, or so you believe, don't do it.

Surely this Goss bloke could of waited 3 months and then said something, how bloody stupid to 'speak out' at this time....did he not see the consequences of his actions. He's been flying for 26 years with Ryanair so it couldnt have been SO bad for the majority of that time - he could of said something earlier ?
Solidarity is a word Ryanair pilots dont understand it seems....if there are really a lot of unhappy pilots in the airline surely they could withdraw their labour on safety grounds or to ensure the reinstatement of this one pilot.
But there are only one or two on here who bleat about things just to get it off their chests and then carry on as normal....

Come on Ryanair Pilots show some balls....demand reinstatement!!

John putting his head above the parapet may not be entirely unintentional, and I suspect Mikey will get a bloody nose over this one.
You could well find this development may have been a quite astute move by the RPG.

Don,t hold your breath for the pilots reaction. . .most of us have been waiting 10 or more years to see that. . . . .

Leaving aside, and despite the rhetoric, and questionable management style of Ryanair, their safety record surely is outstanding.
The sheer number of sectors, many to airfields with non precision landing aids, and the very few number of incidents and accidents, says a lot of their pilots and professionalism.
Same goes for Easy Jet crews.
Many Legacy Airlines would be proud to have such a record.

PS I'm not related to Mr O'Leary!

I tend to agree with you reracked. I'm perfectly sure John Goss already knew the consequence of his actions prior to agreeing to participate.

I just hope that he has some evidence to support his comments, I'm sure he has after all he has been reinstated once before.

Rubbish! What's happening to Junior Doctors in Ireland is a disgrace but if they walk out even more deaths and mistakes will occur.

If pilots go on strike life continues on, people will be a pissed off but so what. Society doesn't need FR planes in the sky. Its the asshat pilots who need to be there so they pay off their loans lest the bank forecloses on their parents house!

Which is extremely unprofessional.
