Reuters has a different story!

ROME, Sept 3 (Reuters) - An investigation has been launched into a near-miss on Monday between a British Midland plane taking off from Rome and an internal Italian flight coming in to land, Italy's flight safety agency (ANSV) said.
"A head-on collision was avoided thanks to excellent visibility of more than 10 kilometres (six miles), which allowed (the planes) to separate by sight, with the Italian pilot changing height," ANSV spokesman Captain Antonio Pellegrino told Reuters.
Pellegrino said none of the passengers on either plane had been affected.
The two aircraft, a British Midland Boeing 737 and a Meridiana MD-80, were flying at the same height at 1.37 p.m. (1137 GMT), ANSV said in a statement.
"At that moment it seems the English pilot did not respect the height assigned to him," Pellegrino said.
Italy's flight controller ENAV, said: "A first investigation shows the Meridiana flight...was authorised to fly at an altitude of 15,000 feet (4,572 metres) while the British Midland plane...had been told to stop at 14,000 feet (4,267 metres)".
"Despite this, the British Midland pilot decided to go higher than the 14,000 authorised by the air controller because he said there was enough visibility to control the position of the two planes by sight," ENAV added.
It said the two planes had passed each other about 20 miles (30 km) off the port town of Civitavecchia, north of Rome.
ANSV said it had already received a report from Meridiana flight IG 115 which had been flying from Olbia, on the island of Sardinia, to Rome.
It had also asked ENAV for recordings of the ground to air communication with the two planes and radar readings. A report from the British Midland flight BMA 8PK was due to arrive in the next few hours, ANSV said.

no comment to this topic, but i find going into lhr daily, i find midland RT the worst. they miss calls and for a airline based in lhr they should know what director wants to hear from them, ie a/c type and altitude etc, they are ALWAYS being asked, you would think by now they would know what is expected. - jmho

jyhp? No so humble methinks. From what I hear daily, no doubt in the same piece of sky as you, the poor r/t is spread fairly evenly across the board. And it isn't just us pilots. The controllers have off days too you know.

Heard a good one yesterday:
Ground to Midland XYZ " Clear to push after the British Airways A319..."

Mid to Ground "After Nigel Minibus clear to push"

Few minutes later, "Midland XYZ you were told to WAIT for the A319"

"Oh??"

Another near miss happened about three weeks ago at Milan Malpensa. A landing aircraft just avoided another aircraft on the runway. I believe it was the fault of the landing aircraft which seems to have been on the wrong runway. This was on the Italian news, but it never made it on to Pprune as far as I know.

Angry

Yet again a topic has been hijacked by a couple of idiots trying to stir up a fight. This time a couple of Nigels doing a bit of bmi bashing. The "wwII ace" - (need I say more?!) If you don't have a comment on this topic then please don't. Keep your ill founded prejudices to yourself. bmi are no worse than anybody else at R/T, and I for one am proud to always display a high standard of it.

I believe the crew recieved a TCAS RA and responded correctly to it. As to the Italians blaming the bmi a/c (within 24 hrs?) - perhaps we should all wait for a (hopefully) full investigation before jumping to conclusions. I for one have found Rome ATC woefully bad every time I've gone in there, with lax R/T, and speaking Italian to there own a/c - could this have been a factor - we shall see.

I'll try, but having just read 'Busta Level's' (rather apt for this thread!) post on Aircrew Notices, couldn't help feeling he might have a point.
Worth a read at: http://www.pprune.org/cgibin/ultimat...&f=41&t=002168

Thumbs down

Whilst entirely agreeing with BmPilot21's sentiments, did the 1st & 2nd posts on this thread have any remote connection? Subsequent posts seem to have none whatsoever.

Having read the first two carefully, several times, I am unable to connect them. It is hard to believe that Dutch TV Text could come up with the first (perhaps a poor third-party translation, he said hopefully), but if the second is the best that Reuters can come up with these days, I am quite amazed. angels, tell me it wasn't verbatim!

If it was, the time has finally come to shoot the messenger, while the rest of Reuters should adopt the foetal position.and whimper.

DrSyn - yip, that was verbatim off Reuters. Must confess, it seemed impecably sourced and doesn't have conjecture in it. I posted it because it was so different to the Dutch item.

Agree with Angels. I saw the article in an Italian paper (in Italian) about the near miss. They definitely were asserting it was the fault of the English guys, who allegedly did not stop climbing at their clearance limit of FL140. Fairly certain there was an incident, but it is way too early to start pointing the finger.

Ciao for now.

Thanks for the confirmation, angels. What a dire attempt at reporting.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone, Faulty. I think you meant to write vein. Many PPRuNers, and indeed aviators, do not have English as their first language. Be kind!

I expect a lot better from reputable international news agencies, however

Ace,

Exactly which part of LHR has Donington Hall, previously in Leicestershire, been moved to?
