Andes MD82 navigation breakdown,

Andes MD82 near Ponta Pora on Jan 12th 2009, navigation breakdown, loss of situational awareness
By Simon Hradecky, created Monday, Jan 12th 2009 21:25Z, last updated Tuesday, Jan 13th 2009 16:54Z
An Andes Lineas Aereas McDonnell Douglas MD-82, flight OY-856 from Buenos Aires Newbury,BA to Jujuy,PJ and further on to Salta,SA (Argentine) with 78 passengers and 6 crew, landed in Ponta Pora,MS [SBPP] (Brazil) around 11am local time (13:00Z) after it had to fly around severe thunderstorms in the destination area. The airplane had departed Buenos Aires at 7:00am (09:00Z) for Jujuy and was estimated to arrive at 08:35am (11:35Z).

The federal police in Ponta Pora reported, that the crew lost all navigation instruments and were navigating just via their magnetic compass, but lost situational awareness completely and thought, they'd be around Paraguay. With just one hour fuel left the Brasilian radar station of Cindacta de Curitiba was able to locate the airplane via their transponder signal and guided the airplane to a safe landing in Ponta Porta.

Andes Lineas Aereas said, that the airplane was avoiding a storm that hit the airplane's navigation instruments. The aircraft was never "lost" however. The airplane diverted to Ponto Pora, because that was the only available airport not being affected by the storm.

Brasilian Authorities have issued permissions to the people on board to stay in Brazil for 10 days, so that they could leave the airport for hotels and await the repair or replacement of their aircraft
