Post Alarm at designer's plans for sexy BA uniforms

from the Glasgow Herald:

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size="2">PLANS by British Airways to put its 30,000-plus staff in "sexy" new uniforms designed by the man who has dressed the likes of Madonna, Victoria Beckham and Liz Hurley have run into considerable turbulence.

Glamour designer of the year, Julien Macdonald, who has also come up with skimpy outfits for Nicole Kidman, Kylie Minogue, Joely Richardson and Goldie Hawn, says that air travel is a glamorous business and his aim was to create a BA uniform reflecting this, yet also practical.

"I want to make all BA staff feel smart and comfortable whether they are in Moscow or Mauritius", said the man whose designs have often hit the headlines for being daring, flesh-revealing, and barely-there.

"The girls will look very sexy and the men will look like strong heroes. They'll be the envy of all other airlines, in the uniforms which will have the Macdonald stamp, with a tight waist and a sharp silhouette.

"The main colour will be navy and I'll be using lots of stretch which helps define the body. They will be sexy, but they will be practical", he said.

However, a concerned spokesman for the main cabin crew union, the Transport and General Workers' Union, said that BA uniforms must be functional, smart and presentable.

"Our members should not be dressed as sex objects and should be consulted on changes to their uniforms," he said adding that cabin crew are "safety professionals" and should be treated as such.

The main objection was that with air-rage incidents and general harassment of crew already on the increase, nothing should be done to put crew in an even more vulnerable position. Quite apart from the safety aspect it is believed that the more mature crew members would be opposed to any move towards "sexy" uniforms.

Announcing that 28-year-old Macdonald soon would be "working his magic" to ensure "glamour is in the air", Martin George, BA marketing director, said: "Our uniform is one of the most powerful symbols of British Airways' brand, and it is important that it is worn with pride by our people on the ground and in the air.

"Julien's vision for our new uniform reinforces the airline's refreshed identity - classic, yet modern, stylish but practical - a quality brand which is recognisable around the world."

Welsh-born Macdonald, who was recently appointed artistic director of fashion house Givenchy, said he would be meeting as many staff as possible to listen to their views.

Remember, "gentlemen" Mr Mcdonald also has
plans to transform you lot into "brave heroes". Ha! he's got his work cut out judging by the fat stomachs and long-haul
beer guts sported at the pointy end these
days. I hope our Julien will also extend
his fashion expertise to what you wear down-route.Or maybe white socks, sandals and bermuda shorts are back in fashion again.
Girlies are gorgeous whatever their size but
overweight pilots with no personality will
never come close to bravity no matter how
much gold braid and brass Julien uses.

Seriously, seriously, though. If this character wants to dress BA FAs in sexy uniforms and in the same breath says it won't encourage air rage -- come one, let's get real. If they are alredy bum-slapping and tit-wonking the current Queen Elizabeth matronly forms, just wait for the new ones. Unfortunately, I don't see it returning to the age when it was "coffe, tea, or me." And rightly so.

How can you look real sexy and still be able to push the ragers away without getting hit on the head with a broken bottle?

OK. That was my rage.

It´s worth a try ,the current ladies outfits are sexless & dated ,even a broad beam will look better in a bit of stretch...oooh Julien you Welsh rascal!.Alternatively they could just copy Alitalia or Air France´s ensembles ,colour it blue & look better for a fraction of the cost,Personally I find a short skirt or tight trousers have a calming effect ;it´s the booze & lack of nicotine that usually ignites the fuse.I liked the ´turd polishing comment ´Yours Cisco

If they're thinking of changing the uniforms, why not let the crew become involved with the decisions? It may take a bit longer to come to a decision, but I'm sure new uniforms aren't a dire emergency.
I understand that crew apperance has a psychological affect on passengers ( sometimes a very large effect ), but I always feel sorry for the poor crewmwmbers ( front, and back end ) when their employers go overboard and dress them up like Prostitutes, and Russian Admiralty.

Ummmmmm . . . just imagine middle-aged lumps, bumps, sags, and bulges in BA spandex. It'll look like a Richard Simmons aerobics video. Argh . . . . I've gotta quit, I'm gettin' queesy.

If I were a BA F/A, I'd make the Captains wear the outfits first, with a slow walk through the terminal.

For a preview, just imagine dear old mother in these "stretchy" outfits...

Being 5' 4'',wide eyed ,smiley & avec breasts,I think the only way the eejit will get me to look like a 'brave hero' will be to accessorise with an AK47 & some carcasses of big vicious animals.
Do the guys get a 'bit of stretch'too,then??heh..heh..This could all be very distracting..

Methinks with the Taleban in charge, the women will be dressed from head to foot in black, the chaps in white robes and the flight crew will be untouchables, banished from sight. If anyone has to use the jumpseat, the pilots will have to wear abayahs and be flogged continuously throughout the flight, and then be stoned to death on landing.

Scottishburd-
AK47 and vicious animal carcass'. Now that's my kind of airline. I'd buy a ticket just to see that! I also bet that'd cut down on the drunk yobbo factor.

I'm also afraid that the guys in spandex would not be distracting as you may think. You know what they say about pilots . . . big watches and little *****.

And imagine that Englishmen think the Scots uncivilized!

As far as the crew being consulted, I remember the BA franchise cabin crew filling in questionnaires about what they wanted from a uniform sometime last year!

This thread should run on jet blast as it's cracking me up with laughter - it was the polished turd that did it !!!!
Just think, the aisle could become the catwalk - lots of loud music and dry ice, trouble is that the "larger" crew would get stuck between the seats doing their twirls.
And as for super heroes.........
