Exclamation PPRuNe News : Software upgrade on Saturday

Danny and myself will be upgrading the bulletin board software to version 6.04d on Saturday 19th.

We will be backing up the forums so that we can go back to the current (5.47) version if necessary. The forums will be unavailable while we do the backup and upgrade. We expect the forums to be offline for one to two hours.

Bear in mind that if do we have to revert back to the current version, any posts made after the upgrade will be lost.

A little history : we have twice before upgraded to version 6 of the forum software, but after each upgrade the performance was unacceptable so we had to revert back to version 5.47. The latest version of 6 is supposed to be much better, and also PPRuNe now runs on a much more powerful server which currently has some space capacity. We'll see...!

GREAT!!!!
Does this mean that I will be able to see my posts when I post them instead of having to wait, sometimes until the following day.

FBW -

It's very possible that your inability to see your posts until the next day is a result of your browser's settings. You might want to ensure that your browser is set to update pages each time that page is accessed, rather than daily.

FBW,

Have to agree with McD, it has to be your local browser settings. If everyone had your problem, which was down to the Pprune software, don't you think there would be around 30,000 odd complaints.? Just a thought.

click on, tools, internet options, connections. Then you can change settings.
WARNING! You can really screw your computer up (like I did once) so it may be an idea to get further advice.
The chaps who frequent the "Computers & Internet" forum are very helpful and knowledgable, I would sugest you post there if you need any further help.

And don't forget that your ISP chould also be catching PPRuNE pages if it is a popular site on their servers. If your with a big ISP such as Freeserve or BT this is likely to be the case for PPRune.org. You can force IE to get the latest page by adding a ? at the end of the URL for the page you want, it will then go and get the latest page from the PPRuNE server and NOT your ISP catched one.

To DAnny et al good luck with the upgrade!!

T&G -

Flybywyre and OzPax1 offer excellent advice in their above posts. If you do decide to change your browser settings, it all depends on which browser you're using. The two most common are Internet Explorer (IE) or Netscape. Here are some examples of how to do it on those two browsers (your version of browser may be different, but the instructions should be similar). If in doubt, heed Flybywire's advice and get some help.

Internet Explorer (I have IE 5.5) --

- In top bar, click on Tools, then click on Internet Options in the drop-down menu
-- You will see a page with different categories such as General/Security/Content etc.
-- Click on General if it is not already displayed
- In the middle section, you'll see Temporary Internet Files and buttons for Delete Files and Settings
-- Click on Settings
- At the top of the settings page, you'll see "Check for newer versions of stored pages":
-----Every visit to the page
-----Every time you start Internet Explorer
-----Automatically
-----Never
- Select Every visit to the page
- Click OK to save the change, then exit

--------------------

Netscape (I have Netscape Communicator 4.6)

- In top bar, click on Edit, then click on Preferences in the drop down menu
-- In the left section of the page that appears next, you'll see a "file tree" that has categories such as Appearance, Navigator, Offline, Advanced among others.
-- Click (or double-click) on Advanced until Cache appears as an option underneath
- Click on Cache
-- You will then see, in the right section, options for
-----Once per session
-----Every Time
-----Never
- Select Every Time
- Click OK to save the change, then exit

---------------

If neither of those work for your browser, you can always click Reload or Refresh when you find that a page has not been updated.

Good luck!

All I can say is that I am the most illiterate coputer person in the world but I can see my postings after hitting the "refresh" button on the toolbar. any problems with seeing postings are definitely to do with your local computer and not with the PPRuNe server. I use IE 5.5

V6 is really good! I think everyone will be pleased. Lots of new features and fixes to old problems. Good luck with the upgrade, I understand it normally is not a problem to install.

Do you have an approximate time when you will be doing this, for all us PPRuNaholics?

Talking

Glad to hear it! I was talking to a mate last evening who had a similar problem - his MSN home page always comes up with the date 16th March, with the news of 16th March, and the status of his hotmail account for that day! Same problem!!

Now I wonder if the new version 6 will return us to the latest page after we post - instead of going back to the first page of a multi-page post

Due to pressure of work etc., the planned software upgrade has been postponed. If anyone has any queries/comments, please post them in the Computers/Internet forum.
