TOKYO — An Asiana Airlines jet carrying 153 passengers and crew members took off without permission Friday at Fukuoka airport, transport ministry officials said. According to the officials, Flight 131, an Airbus A330 service bound for Seoul, was waiting on the runway but took off without clearance from the airport's control tower at around 12:12 p.m.
Just prior to the South Korean airliner's unauthorized departure, the control tower issued a takeoff authorization for a helicopter from a helipad located on a taxiway, the officials said. The incident did not pose a threat to safety as no other aircraft were on the immediate flight paths of the plane and chopper, the officials said.

No threat to safety? Why dont we all do it then??? Bet they both have been signed off level 6 ICAO as well. Testing at "Hazard County" courthouse must be stringent!

Must have been a really short take off run..............................how did they get it to the top of the tower in the first place..... damn clever these Orientals, I bet it saves fuel as well..........................

One thing that never fails to amaze me as one involved in electronics is the sheer poor quality of VHF comms. It ought to be possible these days to make it far, far clearer.

VHF comms are of course ancient and AM but as a native English speaker it works if the kit is good and everyone speaks clearly and SLOWLY!

Ha ha toothpic, laughing at Orientals again? My English ain't perfect and if you're seriously nitpicking, then armchairpilot's sentence is correct when read in context. If you're cherry picking part of that sentence for a good laugh, then I snicker with you as I am a slitty eye GOLDEN yellow oriental!

taufupok, it's humour time. Caucasians like me do not despise or attempt to belittle Orientals but would love you guys to lighten up and lose the inscrutable front. Hey we keep losing at poker to you guys!
Coming to the OZ A330 incident out of FUK, I guess Konglish and Japlish can be quite a bad miss. I was up in the land of morning calm for half a decade and I must say the level of English amongst the older military trained pilots was indeed appalling. Couple with dodgy English from Japanese ATCers, the poor standard of English comprehension can be the cause of serious errors. They have been very lucky so far that one or two holes in the Swiss cheese have not lined up perfectly.

Well I thought the idea of taking off from the Control Tower was cute !! I didnt write that , that was quoted straight off the paper. However, it was correct English by the way.
Since english is the international language of Civil Aviation, lets hope all pilots become better at it. And ATC and everyone else involved.
I noticed when listening in on ATC in TAiwan that they used English when communicating with Civil aircraft but reverted to Mandarin when communicating with TAiwanese military aircraft. Should they not simply just use English if they are using the same airspace?
This was a few years ago and I am not sure if they now use only English actually.
Any opinions on that ?

Apparently the Taiwanese military speak in English if they understand it.Not always the case.
In Thailand all ATC comms is in English,including the military.
