Thomson A/C In flight shutdown

Heard something on the radio today about a TCX jet suffering a multiple bird strike into an engine, leading to a contained fire with a shutdown and a priority landing into EGGP?

...apparently it went back into EGCC not EGGP after two herons collided with it. (according to the century fm website that is, which I must admit is not THE definitive guide to aviation!!)

Oh yes, that wonderful feeling when you see the large winged creatures sail gracefeully past the window. Not. Poor sods. The crew that is. Good job though. You know you are in for a fun half hour when you shut down one of a two engine aeroplane.

Thumbs up

Writing as one of the crew on the aircraft that was lining up for departure after the Thomson got airborne, I can say that the situation was dealt with in a completely professional way by not just the pilots, but ATC, the emergency services, and ground ops.

Very good job ALL round.

Thomson Fly B757-200 engine fire

Just heared on the news that a Thomson Fly Boeing 757-200 had 2 heron bird strikes upon departure from 06L at Manchester this morning, causing a near instant starboard engine fire.

From what ITV news says, the aircraft was in the air 45 minutes before landing again safely at Manchester, everybody ok - Flight deck crew reacted well and declared a mayday instantly.

The whole incident was captured on video by a spotter, and can be viewed here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGIzNJZOw-c

Waiting for further news..

Actually looks like I was beat to creating a thread about it, but I guess this one contains the correct airline and aircraft information :P

Having seen the footage - EXTREMELY well done!

Herons are no pigeons and to ingest 2 in one engine on rotate must have concentrated minds and relaxed sphincters all round.

Nice, unsensational coverage, not a journo in sight

For those 'sniffy' of 'spotters', if things had gone 'pear-shaped' that footage with real-time ATC Tx background would have been useful to the subsequent investigation

No doubt someone will accuse the herons of drinking before flying. If so, was there a major security lapse allowing them airside?

They would get it anyway? - From the cockpit voice recorder?

Plus, they played part of the ATC Tx on the news where the pilot declared a mayday.

A spokesman for Manchester Airport said the engine did not catch fire but the flames were caused by burning of the birds.

Had me wondering for a while why the pilot sent the tx "Thomson XXXC mayday mayday mayday, right engine failiure" - Proberbly because it wasn't actually on fire!

Is it the fact that the one engine took two birds that caused that engine so much trouble or would a single heron have likely had the same effect due to being such a large bird?

Not to be over-dramatic but if these birds had been in the wrong place (to an even greater extent) and the engines had taken a bird each this could surely have been a lot more serious?
