Disconnected airport metal detector leads to delays

Some 800 frustrated travelers were evacuated from Terminal A at Sacramento International Airport Friday morning after power was lost to one of the building's three metal detectors.
Airport spokeswoman Cheryl Demetriff said the 6:10 a.m. power loss was "probably due to human error" and that everyone was allowed back into the terminal 40 minutes later after they were rescreened.
"Potentially, someone could have gone through security without being properly screened while (the detector) was down so everyone had to be re-checked," she said.
Two loaded aircraft on the tarmac were emptied of passengers for re-screening. The aircraft took off about an hour late, Demetriff said.
She said someone apparently accidently turned off the detector's power.
This is not the first time that airport security problems have caused delays at the nation's airports. Recently, at Denver International, an airport security worker was fired after he argued with a co-worker instead of stopping a man who bypassed a metal detector.
The dispute gave the man enough time get on the airport train and take it to one of the airport's three concourses. About 2,500 passengers in the concourse had to be rescreened, delaying 27 flights.
And in November, the Federal Aviation Administration fined a man $3,300 when he ran past two security guards and down an up-escalator at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport. The incident caused the airport to shut down temporarily.
