Multiple aircraft off runway/taxiway at IST??
Heard that there was some fun (sic) last night in IST.
Snowy / windy conditions led to TKA340 off runway and EKA310F off taxiway.
All safe and sound as far as I know.
Anyone know more?
Seems airport authority and ATC couldn't cope with the wtx and snookered the pilots accordingly.

If the pilots went off the taxiway in bad weather it hardly seems fair to blame the airport, does it? No-one made them move of stand.

Wonder how ATC could be involved??? At Heathrow one of my colleagues told a pilot to "turn right to the outer taxiway" and the guy turned immediately right across the grass instead of taking the concrete 100m ahead. Suppose ATC snookered him too?

I'm sorry but IST is a joke when it comes to snow. Doing an approach a couple of years ago, they declared braking action poor; I said I couldn't land in that; then they said - 'sorry - mistake, actually its medium poor'; so I landed and it was like a bloody skating rink with minimal, if any snow clearance, and the taxiways were almost indiscernable.
Then on the taxi in they asked me to tell them what the braking action was!

Flaps One - You obviously weren't here at the time and sounds like your've never had the delight/confusion of IST ATC when these conditions occur. It just turns into one big mess.

joe, while i agree with you about IST ATC being a bit dodgy, let me clear a couple things up for you. The ATC know the braking action from their little pickup truck towing their friction meter behind it, however, that meter doesn't contact all points on the runway as does your 757/767 or maybe A320 don't know what you came in with if any of those at all. So, they still do it today, they ask the crews of different a/c what the braking action was like for them, so they can report it to other similar aircraft, i think it is a wise and clever thing to do, so im not so sure about your reaction when you posted that....
