Non-Aviation Jobs for Jobless Pilots -Any ideas?
With the huge slump in the pilot market, I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck finding a non-aviation job where their aviation background was actually respected.
I'm finding in my quest to pay the rent that most non-aviation employers aren't too fond of my aviation background. I think on a personal level they're impressed by it all -but at the same time they're saying why would we want to hire you when we have 50 other applicants who would be interested in staying for a long period of time.
Background: CPL/ME IR Instructor, Bachelors degree from a large, respected university.
Degree was in a non-applied field. Dumb dumb me!
Any ideas? Gotta pay that rent.

I don't know what you put on your CV and application letters, but if a career in aviation stands out, it's not suprising that prospective employers have taken such an attitude.
I respectfully suggest that you play down the desire to get back into aviation, and put more emphasis on the job you're applying for, i.e. make them aware that you have bothered to find out about the company and what it does. At the interview they're bound to ask you about your desire to return to the industry, it's your call as to whether or not you tell white lies, but the rent demands will not stop.
Your instructing experience should go down well in terms of both dealing with people and working under pressure, make sure you emphasise this.
I don't know what you want to do, but you're obviously not a complete dummy, apply for jobs that catch your eye but you'd have never thought of applying for in the past. I occasionally do this just to see if I can get an interview, out of the last 15, I got 8 interviews and 5 job offers, (I do not have a university education).

Why don't you apply to one of the national newspapers as a bullsh*t control executive? Your job would be to look through every aviation related article and remove any rubbish. Examples of things to remove:
"The pilots, most of whom command six figure salaries..."
"Increasingly being a pilot is all about pushing buttons..."
"The plane stalled and the pilot was unable to restart the engine in time..."
It seems that most national papers could do with someone like this.

My sincere sympathies to all aircrew who find themselves out of the air. Not for long I hope.
In the meantime, you could consider getting an HGV(Heavy Goods Vehicle)Licence. Some of these big artics are very well equipped and computerised and require considerable co-ordination and handling skills. The money can be very good and you get to keep your travelling and nightstops. Minimum rest is laid down by law and cheap good food, always loved by aircrew, is available in thousands of "caffs"

I was out of work a few years ago and for a pilot I agree it is difficult to find an alternative job that pays the same kind of money. However, I found a way:
I became a distributor of a network marketing company called Herbalife. I basically built my own network of distributors, had a lot of fun, learnt really interesting thigs and was earning around £2,000 per month. I'm not saying to join Herbalife, there are other network marketing companies out there, check it out!

I have been through the same situation and would agree that white lies are best. Tell them you've lost your medical due to something that won't effect them. They know the aviation medicals are very tough, infact probably think they are tougher than they actually are.
