Security Breach Jams LaGuardia

NyNewsday.com

December 24, 2003, 6:15 PM EST

All flights out of LaGuardia Airport are being temporarily held up by an undetermined security breach, officials say.

Early news reports indicate that the breach apparently occurred at the Delta Air Lines terminal sometime after 5 p.m. A woman went through a security checkpoint and set off an alarm, but was not re-screened.

When this was discovered, officials closed and evacuated that terminal and began searching for the woman. No more information is immediately available.

LGA's Delta Terminal Returning to Normal After Security Scare
(New York-WABC, December 24, 2003) — LaGuardia Airport's Delta terminal is slowly resuming normal operations, but a security breach late on Wednesday afternoon has put a serious crimp in many travelers' plans.

For a time, all departing flights from LaGuardia Airport's Delta terminal were suspended. The Port Authority tells Eyewitness News that there had been a breach of security at the Delta Airlines terminal.

According to a high-ranking law enforcement official, at about 5:30 Wednesday afternoon a woman set off a metal detector in the Delta terminal. After an inattentive Transportation Safety Administration employee failed to detain her or set off an alarm, the terminal was evacuated.

The terminal is being re-opened, but all travelers must now be re-screened. Please be aware that these delays may have effects on travelers on other airlines, and on entering the airport itself.

Be sure to arrive several hours before your flight's scheduled departure, even if the flight was delayed by this incident.
