55yr old newly qual. CPL(H)
Can anyone help with the following question I was recently asked:
I am hoping to pay my mortgage off in a few years time and then start helicopter lessons with the spare cash flow. I would like to then build up my hours for a commercial course and licence for when I retire. I would be 55 when I retire. What are the job prospects like for a 55 year old fossil newly qualified helicopter pilot ? Obviously a type rating would need to be paid for at the end but realistically what would be the chances of employment? FP  |
Try posting this on the Rotorheads forum as well. The Guys and Girls on there are probably more qualified and more in the know to answer your question.:)

Fresh Prince,
I know very little about the rotary business but I would imagine there is generally much less opportunity than fixed wing and as usual experience would be king. Therefore, I don't think what you propose is a very good idea unless you have excess money to burn. Why not do a PPL(H) and just enjoy yourself flying for pleasure? |
Sorry mate but the answer is not what you want to hear! The fact is that finding a job at 55 is hard even if it's in the field that you have experience in. A career change at 55 is unrealistic - sorry but that's the truth! Don't waste your money! Go fly for fun!
