55yr old newly qual. CPL(H)

Can anyone help with the following question I was recently asked:

I am hoping to pay my mortgage off in a few years
time and then start helicopter lessons with the spare cash
flow. I would like to then build up my hours for a commercial
course and licence for when I retire. I would be 55 when I retire.
What are the job prospects like for a 55 year old fossil newly
qualified helicopter pilot ?

Obviously a type rating would need to be paid for at the end but realistically what would be the chances of employment?

FP

Try posting this on the Rotorheads forum as well. The Guys and Girls on there are probably more qualified and more in the know to answer your question.:)

Fresh Prince,

I know very little about the rotary business but I would imagine there is generally much less opportunity than fixed wing and as usual experience would be king. Therefore, I don't think what you propose is a very good idea unless you have excess money to burn. Why not do a PPL(H) and just enjoy yourself flying for pleasure?

Sorry mate but the answer is not what you want to hear! The fact is that finding a job at 55 is hard even if it's in the field that you have experience in. A career change at 55 is unrealistic - sorry but that's the truth! Don't waste your money! Go fly for fun!
