Great to see a good outcome. Looks like they got the two rafts tethered together.

Has ‘ditching’ permanently morphed into ‘water landing’? They really aren’t the same thing.

I’m not sure that the change in terminology is fooling anyone.

I infer that after a water "landing" a takeoff from the water will be easily possible within the aircraft's capabilities. Ditching, not so much...

Nescafe 3rd January 2026 04:04

Exactly. Since an S76 had a ‘water landing’ in Nigeria, the term seems to be in vogue, as if it is somehow less of an event than a ‘ditching.’

Looking at the way the main rotor blades are sagging down in the still photo on the news item linked in #1, take-off will not be "easily possible"! Question is whether that occurred on initial touchdown or while rocking around in the sea thereafter?

Anyway, good outcome.

If you have to ditch, those are the conditions to do it in. Glad all are safe.

Design an aircraft for water take-offs and you can do a water landing - anything else is a ditching:ok:

First signs are a 960 ft/min climb 250 ft above cruise and a deceleration:

Slows down to a minimum of 43 kts:

Reaches 5,000 ft/min at one point

With the fenestron half submerged like that, would you even want to try and start and launch??

Perfect bow thruster!

albatross 3rd January 2026 16:48

Well done by all concerned.
Any rumours as to cause of the decision to “Ditch”?

Kulwin Park 4th January 2026 11:21

Is it just me or do the main rotor blades look too close together here?
Has 1 blade pin failed maybe?
