Looking for CH-53 Photo
Saw the particular photo some where many, many years ago. Aircraft had been subject to a mortar attack, Khe Sanh I think. The wanted photo was taken from the aircrafts right hand side and the only items remaining forward of the cockpit bulkhead was the helmeted right seat pilot, slumped in his seat with chin on his chest. Besides the seat sitting on a small piece of remaining flooring nothing else remained of the cockpit. A very evocative photo in my mind,as in below.

Megan,
I think this is one of the crash you are looking for. I will add more in a few minutes as I find them. https://i.pinimg.com/736x/8f/ff/3a/8...erican-war.jpg Some accounts of the event by some crew members. Short version...the aircraft had taken off..been hit...crashed....rotor blades had taken off the cockpit overhead and apparently hit both pilots. http://www.hmh-463-vietnam.com/kia463/kia22feb68.html https://www.oocities.org/~khesanh/53crash.jpg I found one other photo but it had been blurred out and was of no value. It might have been the one you were seeking. |
Sorry, not the one SAS, aircraft in question was sitting on its wheels, plus in your snap the aircraft has a nose. The photo in question only showed the front twenty feet or so of the fuselage.

This isn't the correct image, but looks like the correct incident maybe (Khe Sanh, 22nd February 1968, direct mortar hit), CH-53A of HMH-463, S/N 153283;

Afraid not Thrust, but thank you, that is the same aircraft/incident as the photo posted by SAS above.
