Business vs Flying
Hello everyone. Would like a quick opinion on this dilemma I have. I know there are a lot of risk factors to consider to actually make a thorough analysis as well as the "passion" factor. I've just become pragmatic and very critical with my decisions but please try to keep it brutally honest and simple.
¿should I spend 70% of my savings in starting a business I can argue will work out or pivoting my career at 36 years old and pursuing a career as a helicopter pilot? |
As a business decision, spending all that money on a job that doesn't really pay that much is not a good idea, but since when did logic come into it? :)

If the remaining 30% of your savings gives you a bit of a cushion, go for it. Unlikely you will get rich out of flying but what price do you put on living your dream?
I have a man maths calculator you can borrow if required. |
Been said a million times here. Make your money then buy yourself a machine.

Spend your money on starting/developing a business. Get a PPL(H) and fly for fun.

PPL (Private Pilot Licence) as opposed to CPL (Commercial Pilot Licence)
You noted a choice between either starting a business or training as a commercial pilot (I assume your proposed business is non-aviation). The first query is 1) do you want to fly helicopters or 2) do you want to fly helicopters as a profession? If your driver is just flying helicopters, unquestionably, the best scenario would be to build/grow a business and “create something” then fly for pleasure - if you want to get a “Job” as a pilot, the remaining majority of the forum can better assist. Getting a PPL and flying helicopters privately is a fantastic hobby, depending on circumstances you can rent, buy or join/create a group. Your private flying will be always be enjoyable as you are choosing exactly what flights you do. Read posts here or on other social media; many professional have never even taken their family/friends for flights – that’s some of the most fun flying you will have. As a private pilot I’ve flown on five continents (presently licenced to fly on three). I’ve flown mountain, sea crossings, Arctic, desert, night and have a lot of great memories/photos/videos. Nothing wrong with pursuing a commercial role, I’m just noting that decades of fun helicopter flying can be had with a PPL(H). |
