Flying in icing conditions.
There seems to be a growing trend to flying in icing conditions IMC with little or no lower level positive air. I’m intrigued what Generation Z are using to define ‘Icing Conditions’. Lately the 214 Met Form haven't been very accurate so what do crews use? The UK Mil cross section was very useful back in the day but doesn’t seem to be available to civilians. Thanks everyone..

Not sure I’m “Gen Z” but I used the standard of anytime you’re in moisture laden air with a true ambient OAT of 0°C or below.
….and know the capabilities of your aircraft. Watch out for any signs of build up on the windscreen wipers! If there is freezing rain in the forecast stay indoors. |
Got caught in freezing rain once in Germany, clear screen to iced up in seconds - fortunately a rapid 180 got us out again quickly - scary stuff.
The problem with icing conditions is that the forecast can meet the criteria Shy mentions with no icing or not meet the criteria with significant icing present. It's only a forecast after all (unless you have an in flight report to back it up). Maybe Gen Z are Dirty Harry fans - are you feeling lucky punk? - When they set off into the cold murk. |
