USA Tariffs
Wow.... so what is the implementation of the US tariffs going to do the Global helicopter industry. I've had the good fortune to attend one, but what will the former HAI annual convention look like?? Display spaces being cancelled yet?? Here in Canada, we have both Bell and Airbus operating plants in both countries... What's going to happen to agencies helping each other out during fire seasons?? The world has changed again this weekend... I don't feel it's for the better...:ugh:

Here are a few thoughts to start off
|
The POTUS doesn’t even understand the basics of how tariffs work.
Now he is mumbling about tariffs on the EU… I have no idea if those tariffs will be imposed before or after he takes over, by force if required, Greenland, Panama and annexes Canada. Yet the people voted for him. Good luck paying the increased costs for Gas, Electricity, aluminium, ect. But hey….apparently they don’t want or need any of that stuff. Supposedly all ordinary US citizen needs to live a happy and fulfilling life is cheap eggs. |
Lets be fair here the rest of the world has been taking the piss out of the USA, just look at defence spending. Why should the US spend more on defending Europe than us Europeans ? Mexico has just cut a deal with Trump ! It's a negotiating stance .
|
A negotiating stance? It's far closer to the ministry of silly walks, just with extreme silliness.
Trying to make sense of something as illogical and irrational as whatever thought process may, or may not be going on will only make your head explode. There are plenty of other places to export goods if the US does not want them. When markets shift, so do businesses and jobs. Life will carry on and adapt irrespective of the lunacy on that side of the pond. No doubt all the manufacturers have a plan B, if not, a sizeable purchase of meme coins should encourage some policy changes :E |

Yup, you're right it a negotiating stance, and if I as a Canadian had a say, the oil and electricity would be the first thing that Canada shuts off. Second thing would be shutting down all freight traffic headed south. I'm sure the thebrest of the world would be happy picking up what Trump gave up. Rumor has It that we've already found a new market for the aluminum he didn't want.
Who do you think has the most to lose? |

Tdracer, there will be no winners and the damage has been done. Canada supplies 60 percent of your oil and gas needs, who wins if Canada decides to shut off the taps. If Trump had a legitimate reason other than the Border, than I might be prepared to listen to his reasoning but the volume of drugs going into the US from Canada if far less than the number of illegal firearms that come in to Canada from the US. As for the people crossing into the US this is an American problem not Canada's. If the US doesn't want people sneaking into the US than maybe they should do something about other than a stupid trade work. And yes I understand that Trump has the right to put whatever tariffs on what ever he wants but to publicly declare that if Canada fights back with it own tariff then he's going to increase his tariffs. That Sir is the response of a BULLY
While I agree that no one wins in a trade war, it's a negotiating position. Columbia said it wouldn't accept repatriation of Columbian nationals - Trump said 'fine, 25% tariff on coffee and other (legal) exports for Columbia to the US. Columbia folded in hours. Trump wants some changes from Canada. As I previously posted, a trade war between the US and Canada will hurt Canada more than the US, and your PM is already a lame duck and not exactly negotiating from a position of strength. |

I call BS on the 60% of oil and gas - the numbers I'm seeing are more like 10%, and much of that is locational convenience - it's cheaper to use Canadian fuel that to transport what's needed from domestic sources (the US then exports a similar amount of oil and gas, mainly to Asia). Plus a lot of your oil sands stuff requires very specific refining capabilities - capabilities that are not common outside of the US, so who are you going to sell it to instead?

BS is a two way street, here's an articke from the BBC which in my lowly Canadian, opinion is more reliable than F I x News https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c627nx42xelo
The amount of oil and gas that the US imports is ~10% of it's total - so Canada supplies ~6% of what the USA uses, not 60%. Like I said, BS! |

If you actually read the article that you linked, it said that Canada supplies 60% of the oil that the USA imports, not that the US uses.

Almost inevitable that this has turned into an extension of the US Politics thread. Please take any non-Rotorheads discussion there and just stick to the effects of tariffs on the Rotary Industry in this thread 👍
