Exclusive: NHV Cancel All Flights Over Helicopter Safety Concerns After Crack Found

Oil and Gas People has learned that NHV has today grounded all of its helicopter fleet cancelling flights across the North Sea.

NHV confirmed they have chosen to cancel all flights after a major crack was found on one of the Aberdeen based 175’s in the horizontal stabilator. The helicopter in question was not operated by NHV.

A source told Oil and Gas People that the crack stems the length from leading edge to near the trailing edge of the stabilator.

A flight speed restriction was put in place by the aircraft manufacturer Airbus but NHV decided instead to cancel all flights and wait for the release of a safety bulletin that will be released this afternoon.

Another source offshore advised us that people due to crew change tomorrow with NHV have been advised of a delay in their travel plans.

Oil and Gas People has reached out to Airbus the manufaturer of the helicopter for comment and is waiting on statements. We will update this article as they come through.

If you have any information contact [email protected] in confidence.

Looking at Dawn's crack, I think she has been having vibratory action around her rear end. I am surprised that her doctor wouldn't have been humming to her and giving her some warning that she needed some attention.

HUMS - all depends on what you want to look for ;-)
The weight of the side ‘plates’ at each end of stab did surprise me......

Helicopterfixerman 20th June 2019 12:52

I may be wrong, but I understand the stabiliser is an approved work platform for maintenance.........

Stuff these modern fragile plastic fantastic whirlybirds, bring back some real iron like ye ol' 212 for crew change!

80 Knots you say? Bring back the Whirlwind...

In my limited knowledge, I believe every helicopter horizontal stabilizer, or tailboom for that matter, has gone through a cracking phase at some time. And sometimes multiple times when the first repair simply moves the crack to a different location.
