Which Noise Signature ?

There are many different Noise Signatures that Helicopters make when approaching straight and level - steep turning - etc.be it from Main or Tail Rotors 2 -3 - 4 - or multi bladed types.
Would anyone agree that the MD 500 has one of the best making you feel great to be hands on with, or might it be the SA 341 ?
Some might say they could tell from the noise it made as to who was flying it !

I prefer, 5 blades turning fast, zooming by

Airwolf :)

But really, there's so many, it's really hard to choose. I'd say Gazelles and C/early N series Dauphines do it for me the most.

The old Huey....Bell 205.....is the Iconic Sound Machine of our time!

High speed, nose tucked, and a hard bank turn with max power applied....and the Old Darling Talks to you!

One such routine.....at Duxford Heli-Tech rattled Wine Glasses off Tables!

Top that with your Whistling Pig! (Gazelle).

Them original AS365's made a sound on lift-off like a bearing was about to fail - sure made you look up and get as far away as possible :}

Who cannot like the sound of a flat whoop, whoop, whoop from way out in the distance gradually getting louder and louder and turning into a deeper whoop, whoop, whoop sound on arrival.

Remember awaiting the arrival of a Bell 214 to lift one of our machines that had had an "unfortunate event". We were at one end of a very long (60 plus mile) valley and there was cloud cover at about 2000 feet. We heard it twenty two minutes before it arrived!

RVDT 8th February 2019 10:44

Sounds about right. We used to note the time when you could hear a Bell 2 blade medium offshore.

Depending on the weather conditions on average between 20 - 25 miles!!

paco 8th February 2019 11:00

Yeah, the missis started making tea when she heard it...

Redhill Tower used to hear us coming in the Huey somewhere around Woking.....as we were the only 204/205/212 flying in the UK at the time....there was no hiding who we were.....or where.
