On a recent trip to my fathers home, my 4yr old son had a taken all his Hot Wheels cars, toy helicopters and drink coasters from the table (to serve as helipads) and had a made an elaborate Heli Centre on the living room floor. Grandad then looks and asks him are the helicopters to take people to the hospital if the cars wreck? He looks up and says “No, helicopters are for when you’re hungry” He’s only ever witnessed them as a means to go to lunch or dinner w/ Daddy. |

After slightly more than two years off, today I returned into the cockpit of the H300 (of course with FI).
This is more or less a personal Helicopter Day for me ;-) Had to get accustomed again to everything, but confident, that I will be able to get back my type rating. Of course, fun returned immediately ;-) Thracian |

World Helicopter Day is on again - Sun 18 Aug 2019.
This is the fifth year of the event with rolling open days around the globe. Call is out for event locations coming up for this year. If your company or organisation would like to host an open day at your location then details are on the website. Nil cost to be involved. Goal is to promote the industry in local communities around the world and achieve some PR both locally and internationally for what helicopters (and the people in the industry) do for society. 91 days to run to World Helicopter Day 2019!
Two goals: 1. Have you put Sunday 18 August in your calendar for World Helicopter Day 2019, and 2. Inspire you to start planning an event in your city or at your airfield. This is the fifth year of the event! Once again this will be a chance for the helicopter world to celebrate the people that make up our industry, our collective achievements and importantly, an opportunity to bring the public up close to the wonderful machines we operate. That so many venues return each year speaks to the fact that it is a fun day for all involved. In past years we have had event nominations from: * Alabama, USA * Wevelgem, Belgium * Balearic Islands, Spain * Ramsgate, UK * Cairns, Australia * Manchester, UK * Munich, Germany * Chard, UK * Fort William, UK * Hawaii, USA * Washington, USA * Leicestershire, UK * Belgrade, Serbia * California, USA * New York, USA * Perth, Australia * Arkansas, USA * Hong Kong, China * Johannesburg, South Africa * Newcastle, Australia * Somerset, UK * Pennsylvania, USA * Kinloss, UK * Brisbane, Australia * Northamptonshire, UK * Nottinghamshire, UK * Quebec, Canada * Perth, Australia * Capetown, South Africa * Abbotsford, BC * Las Vegas, USA * White Waltham, UK * Melbourne, Australia * Gold Coast, Australia * Texas, USA * Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Your event could be anything from a hangar open day, BBQ, guest speaker or training session, airshow, joy flights and right up to the harbour-side event in Hong Kong with marching band. There is nil cost to be involved. Your event gets world-wide exposure through the World Helicopter Day social media accounts and you are playing an important part in showcasing our industry to the world. At the grassroots level your event could well be the first time someone in your local area ever gets to see a helicopter up close. It could be the experience that sets them down the path of a career in the helicopter industry. To see some of the reach of the day look at the #worldhelicopterday hashtag usage on Instagram and Twitter. More photos from last year are located on the day's Facebook Page. Resources such as event checklists, example press releases and graphics/banners are avaliable on the main website. Hey its that time of year again! World Helicopter Day 2020
Grateful to all of you that make the industry what it is! It is tough times for many in our community so thinking of those affected by the pandemic. It can take its toll on mental health - you are not alone though! Make sure we look after each other. There are very few in-person events this year understandably. If you are on shift today or have some recent pics post online with the #worldhelicopterday tag if you want to join in with others and make some noise about what it is that we do. |
Here are a couple of tweets in recognition of World Helicopter Day
|
World Helicopter Day for 2021 is on Sunday 15 Aug - just over 70 days away. This is its seventh year.
Local COVID situation varies greatly around the world at the moment. If makes sense where you are and your company/organisation/airfield is keen to hold an open day / open hangar morning / BBQ or similar event to celebrate the day you can get some publicity by submitting the details at World Helicopter Day - Celebrate Vertical Flight! That gets you on the global website and promotion through the day's social media accounts. Nil cost. I'm not sure where each of you got your first introduction to helicopters which put you onto a path in the industry. For many though it was attending an airshow or open day. This is a chance to invite people in from your local community to show them what you do and allow them to see a helicopter up close - not an everyday opportunity for most people. World Helicopter Day is a good way to keep the locals onside to remind them of the public good / economic benefit you bring to the area if they are prone to noise complaints. Also a very low cost marketing activity with potential for local media coverage. Ideas that have worked in previous years - flight sims, joyflights, face painting, scavenger hunts, Defence recruiting, guest speakers, visiting emergency services / police helicopters, drones, military cadets, super cars, food / coffee vans and fly-in parking for static displays. - live virtual event - or something as simple as a BBQ for students Again, obviously only if makes sense to be holding in-person public events where you are located. Failing that put it in your calendar and prepare some online content around the #worldhelicopterday hashtag |
World Helicopter Day - 15 Aug 2021
Mick, thanks for the reminder. I will make contact with you and see if I can help. Our industry in Australia is doing better than many others. The shortages of pilots and engineers is not helped when my last six monthly check of the Australian register showed a growth rate just nudging 5%. So there is light at the end of the tunnel - hopefully? Mick and team, your last event was really so good. Rob |
