Captain Eric 'Winkle' Brown
Very sad news, alas he lived a good life and did so much for the aviaion industry especially with the helicopter industry
?World?s greatest? aviator Eric Winkle Brown dies at 97 - Edinburgh Evening News In Wings On His Sleeve, its interesting to see him help shape up the German Naval aviation in post war West Germany..and more interesting when he visited Boeing Vertol to check out the CH-47A in anticipation of the RAF buying them in the 1960s.but did not follow through till 15 years later on... RIP Sir, ATB |
Probably one of the greatest aviators this country ever produced - no?
RiP Sir. |
The world ever produced.
RIP The Sultan |
I detest the use of the word "legend" in todays jargon but in this case..
RIP Winkle |
What very sad news.
RIP Sir. |
Very sad news. A wonderful man and a good friend for some fifty years.
RIP Eric. |
I'm not going to say "sad news" because we all have to go sometime and if I could go having done 1% of what he achieved, I would have had a good life and felt content. It is not really a loss because he has left so much legacy.
Anyway despite his fame and achievements he was a very pleasant and down to earth chap, I had the pleasure of meeting him once. |
I also met him in the 80s and agree, he was a gent and down to earth. 97 is a full life and a good innings to use cricket vernacular. Our industry is the better for having Eric had on board for many years.

I don't beleive it, he looked so well recently.
Knew him for 40yrs and he was always incredibly nice to me. What a great life. What a blow to civilisation. (first Bowie now this!) Imagine being told to fly by Udet ! |
When I listened to any of his talks he was totally inspiring
For those who may not have heard this Desert Island Discs programme, it really sums up Captain Brown's remarkable and full life. BBC Radio 4 - Desert Island Discs, Captain Eric 'Winkle' Brown |
There is a very interesting documentary on Netflix about him where he gives an autobiographical account of his life.
Certainly a life never to be repeated. |
RIP Sir, and thank you for yours and your wife Lynns friendship with me and Eva during the years since our membership of the EHA Offshore Committee !

Can you tell me what title the documentary is on Netflix...can't find it!

Youtube version, amazing guy and I'll hoist a good Scotch in his honor. Such a contrast to the unimaginative, ham-handed bus drivers we've now become as pilots.

I have just finished watching two documentaries about Captain Eric "Winkle" Brown.
Whilst I had always been aware of his immense contribution to our Aviation industry, these films confirmed what a truly remarkable aviator he was. He was a legend and a true inspiration to others, as well as being a gentleman. He is a very hard act to follow. RIP Sir |
A recent RAeS tribute to Eric by Paul Beaver entitled 'A Life at Full Throttle' can be found here.
