UL91 for Robinsons

With some local airfields electing only to stock UL91, I would appreciate feedback from anyone using it on R22B2 (Lycoming 360J)
It seems Lycoming happy with it for nearly 2 years...but how about experience...

I would also like to know if anybody else is using this on R22 Beta 2 as I need to refill my bowser very soon.

I think the main difference is you need to use W15/50 oil instead of W80. I think there is a service letter about it.

biggles38 29th June 2014 13:12

Thanks... I think nearly all 22 use 15/50 anyway.

I am using W80 and I can't find a service letter on the subject so I will ask the factory. It seems to be quite a bit cheaper than 100LL at airfields so I will check what the difference is on bulk delivery price. I also have a Rotax engined fw aircraft and UL91 is intended for that engine.

biggles38 29th June 2014 15:50

That would be helpful.
I also have a FW PA28 with Lycoming 320J

My engineer checked that and gave me OK with W80 oil.

The Robbo site from 2012 says UL91 is usable in R22 and 44.

I`ve used UL91 also in Rotax on a shadow micro.

My guess is that its actually usable with either oil in both Lycoming engines, just would like more concrete evidence before putting in the 22.

Many thanks

I asked Robinson and just got the following reply-

Page 3 of Lycoming Service Instruction 1070S dated 24 April 2013 cautions
the operator to ensure "...Lycoming oil additive LW-16702, or an equivalent
finished product such as Aeroshell 15w50, must be used." Link:

http://www.lycoming.com/Lycoming/SUP.../ServiceInstru
ctions.aspx

If you look up Aeroshell 15w50 it says that the Lycoming LW-16702 is already added to it in manufacture. So I guess that is the answer to the original question.

thanks Muffin.

It looks like by using aeroshell 15/50 we should be OK with UL91 then??

That's how I see it.. do you agree?

Total AeroXPD 80 contains an identical additive to LW16702
clearly stated on container

That does seem to be the case - unless anybody knows different?
