Not really heli related - but as aviators you may be keen to watch this. Felix is currently being live broadcast in a helium balloon working it's way up to 23-24 miles altitude to attempt the worlds highest sky/space-dive. He is expected to become the first person to break the speed of sound in free fall. All being broadcast live as we speak, expected jump time 15.30 GMT. They are not sure what will happen as he approaches the sound barrier, and the biggest concern is going into an uncontrollable spin leading to a blackout (as happened to the previous record setter).

Have it on. There is a thread in the Jet Blast section covering it.

And after all that, and successfully breaking the sound barrier jumping for over 100k feet....

He wants to be a heliopter pilot :ok:

Baumgartner has said he plans to settle down with his girlfriend and fly helicopters on mountain rescue and firefighting missions in the U.S. and Austria.

Going head first through the "wall" helped in that decision? :)

Pittsextra 15th October 2012 09:45

yeah on that i wonder what temperature was experienced with the friction in the lower atmosphere?

what helos involved supporting this?

Does anyone know what rotary wing support was in support? From filming to EMS?

Cheers

judging by the spin he got himself into during the first minute or so, I'm sure his rotary training helped a lot :}

Amazing achievement. I've done a bit of free fall, but this was one helluva leap of faith..

The point was after this extraordinary feat - the most appealing thing he could think of was flying helicopters.... ;)
