R44 Hover at 1000fps
Hi all
This is a QT movie of me hovering in an R44, the camera we used was a Phantom HD Digital hi-speed camera that can shoot at up to 1500fps. Thanks to Mark at Helicopter Transport & Training at YSBK. I have others at better resolution if anyone is interested, but they can be big files... R44 Hover at 1000fps Rgd's Catpants |
Cool!
You must have had an incredible density altitude! So can you extend the component life limits by operating that way? There must be much less wear! Pilot DAR |
better yet, imagine how long it takes for the hobbs to roll over at that speed!
|
So how would you log the flying time?

Idea...
Any chance of having someone fly in formation with you and record actual foward flight at the same fps?
|
No ..just a !!!! helicopter:rolleyes:
If you look closely you can see the blades delaminating on each revolution :ok: How about a lawnmower next :ok: |
I didn't know lawn mowers could hover
|
All flymo models without wheels electric and petrol are hover mowers floating on a cushion of air hence the name fly mo .

Why do you say the R44 is such a bad heli?
8,000 + sold!?!!?? |
That makes 8,001 muppets:ok: ( I,m allowing an extra one incase someone buys one tomorrow )
The answer is no i dont like them ...i flew one way back around 82 and vowed never to get into another one  |
Nigelh, I might be off to the UK this week-end. I think I'm gonna come over to yours and make you fly in one :p
Don't worry, I'll be sure to check the blades for (to ensure they have) de-lamination first. I promise to make it an interesting trip!! :ok: |
Whether old salts like the Robbies or not, its opened the door to flying helicopters for alot of people!!
1 being my self. I wouldnt be able to afford training and hour building on anyting else, even a 300. Its done alot of work, created alot of jobs, racked up thousands of hours and been enjoyed by thousands of people...... Its not a big powerful turbine helicopter capable of anyting thrown at it but its never claimed to be..... Its got a few little problems here and there but what helicopters havent for that money. R44's cheap, realiable, pretty quick, seats 4... what more do people want from it? Like I said, it put me in a position so learn to fly as it did for hundreds of others, and I love them for that. |
....and i will never forgive Frank for that :{
Come along to Yorkshire in your 44 birddog and i,ll give it a go  having just sold my 350 i have been offered a 44 to get me around for the time being ......at the same dry price as the fuel cost on my old heli  maybe i should give it a go as my recession economy ..... I cant believe i just said that:ugh: I will have to sport a false moustache , anorak and shell suit to look the part:uhoh: |
".at the same dry price as the fuel cost on my old heli"
Maybe you have answered your own question then about why they are so popular. How often was your guzzling machine carrying more than 4 people? I wouldn't have ever got my licence without Frank's inventions. Sorry if mere PPL's with Robinson tickets are ruining your "turbine-only" skies. I realise it is dreadfully crowded up there, but of course we wouldn't be brave enough to go about 1000' in case the machine falls apart mid flight, so 1001' and above can be all yours. Actually, preferably higher so we don't have to listen to the whining..... Rattle |
