look - new heliplane concept ....
Challis Heliplane | The World's Fastest Rotorcraft Helicopter | 300+ MPH Heliplane
.. if it really will work - I would like to have one.. :} |
300mph?? How the hell can a RC model do that speed?
Did they put a mini RR engine into it or something! |
seems very obtimistic, read there FAQ, I think they think there goona dominate to V22's market..... :ugh::ugh:
|
I thought I had seen this concept before........................

R44-pilot, you forgot to mention they also appear to be competing for the Marine One contract.... New administration and all that...

Someone is smoking some high quality stuff...
There is a ton of stuff that needs to be done to get this into the public skies. Certification of UAVs is not yet sorted out by any country, and that is going to be a huge hurdle. I'll add this to my list of 'Flights of Fancy'. |
As an aside, how is the forward prop powered?
Bicycle anti-torque pedals? Otherwise the pilot gets to straddle a gearbox... saves cost of building a seat? :ok: |
Lol, yeah, you can see them now.... Strolling into the white house... Model in one hand transmitter in the other.....
Mr President I give to you.... the future! And as for RJ's post, I think if Lockheed couldnt make it successful how the hell are 4 guys in a garden shed gonna manage.... lol :ugh: |
The thing is they dont just want it to be a UAV....
they think this is going to :hmm::rolleyes::hmm: (a) Be full size (b) knock the V22 off the militarys list (c) fly the president.... (d) build one as bigg as the mil-26 and carry 150 px and (e) LOL, get certification BEFORE Bell/Agusta's 609??!! And they have what a model helicopter with a prop stuck on the front?:D As said, someone HAS to be smoking some high quality stuff...... :ugh: |

And LockheedŽ did advance things one step further.......with difficulty. :)

But even if that little stub wing would solve the retreating blade stall problem, what about the advancing blade approaching transonic speeds? Huge amounts of drag will be produced there.
I've never understood this whole obsession with getting choppers to go so fast. It's not what it was designed for. And if you do have a need for both high speed and vertical take-off, then you can always put your name on the list for a BA609 Tiltrotor. |
I agree, choppers should be choppers....
If theres that much need for VTOL and High speed, why don't they make a big px harrier design? It's not a new design, if they can get it to work all them years ago, well with all the technologies and advance materials they have now there must be a market for it..... I.e make a VTOL px (or troop) carrying jet, leave the helicopter alone:* yeah, that would work, airbus with thrust vectoring, interesting.......:hmm: |
Been done before...

Half wing: Looks like another concept in need of a stress engineer!
Either the whole rotor gets unloaded (ie Full wing) or you share the load with a second advancing rotor (ie X2). Anything else puts huge stresses on shaft, bearings, gearbox, mounting system, airframe etc. This translates as extra mass and lost payload or range. Another flight of fancy... |
