North India Heli News--
Himachal ties up with three helicopter taxi operators 2010-12-06 Dharamsala, Dec 6 (IANS) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said Monday that the government has signed an agreement with three operators of helicopter taxis and identified routes and fixed air fares to boost tourism. 'A memorandum of understanding has been signed with three companies to provide interstate and intrastate heli-taxi services. This will boost tourism in the state and enable the tourists to visit landlocked areas and destinations in a short span of time,' Dhumal, who also holds the portfolio of tourism, said in the state assembly. He said Mesco Airlines Limited would operate heli-taxis on 19 routes. 'The one-way fare between Shimla and Chandigarh has been fixed at Rs.4,500, whereas it would be Rs.7,500 between Shimla and Dharamsala and Rs.6,000 between Shimla and Kullu,' he said. Dhumal said the fare on 28 routes ranging from Rs.2,000 to Rs.13,000 has been finalised by the state tourism department. The two other heli-taxi firms are Simm Samm Airways Pvt Ltd and Shiva Heli Services. The tourism department has identified 57 helipads in the state that could be made functional for the heli-taxi service. Himachal Pradesh, known for its apples and picture-perfect tourist spots, attracted 11,437,155 tourists, including 400,583 foreigners, last year. Kullu and Manali are tourist hotspots, followed by Shimla and Dharamsala, the seat of the Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. |
Much ado about very little
I am pleased to see that this last post is not getting too many people excited as I reckon it is a bit of a non event. The Agreement will probably be still born and buried within the year.
The HP government is offering only the airspace and access to the helipads but apparently are not taking a share of the financial risk. Mesco are going to be challenged as presumably they will be required to have the same machine in two different places serving two different ‘contracts’. Simm Samm Airways are not believed to have any aircraft and are basically an agent. |

28 routes, 57 helipads does seem a bit grandiose.... not the first time something less than the truth/reality was written.
Someone deserves credit for having a touch of creative thinking in trying to develop business though. |
GoodGrief - a Correction
Thanks GoodGrief for the correction.
I should have referred to Shiva Heli Services. I will try and be more careful next time. Before I annoy someone else let me add that being an agent is not all bad. I believe that they are looking to tie up a wet lease with an established operator. They may do the work but it will not create any new pilot jobs. With regard to Simm Samm’s MD 600 how is that going to operate at high altitude? I understand the service ceiling is only 13,500. Any operator of the MD600 wish to add a comment? |
And this is no doubt a good new car but.............................

Himachal Pradesh
Hello Fellow Pprune-rs,
I have been living in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, just North of New Delhi for over 2 years now. I also was excited to hear about these helipads, and the expanded heli-taxi service in the area. And then I heard about it again, and again. Like many things in India, as Shortshaft points out, they talk and they talk. I do know of a handful of very specialized tour routes, and they are mainly seasonal to take pilgrims (read everyone) up to the temple atop very very tall mountains. The 10-15 min flights are to save the people who can afford it (read wealthy) the 45 minute trudge up the mountain to pray at the temple. I see military helicopters almost every day where I live in the foothills of the Himalayas, but I have yet to see these 57 taxi helicopters everyone has been talking about for over 2 years now. |
After all is said and done, more is said than done..a whole lot more.

Expat Rotorheads in India?
Greetings;
I'm a US pilot looking to learn more about flying or non-flying rotary wing opportunities in India, especially the south ie Bangalore. Currently in Bangalore, on the 19th-20th I'll travel to New Delhi for the Heli Power seminar. Thanks! Please reply in the thread or private message. |
Information may be found at rwsi.org
Rules and regs are here: dgca.nic.in Download the FATA rules. The major biggie is having at least 100 hours on the type you're requested to fly. |

Any new openings India?
With a really dry and starved civil helicopter employment scene- anyone knows what is coming up? Too many doomsdayers out there!
