Bond One - Type?
 

Hi,
Can anyone confirm what type of helicopter is operating under the callsign of 'Bond 1' and provides a rescue service around the Aberdeen area and from the Oil Rigs? It reports directly to Kinloss ARCC.

It will be one of the two Bond Offshore AS332L2s operating on a BP Offshore Search and Rescue contract ("Jigsaw"). One is normally based in Sumburgh and the other on the Miller Platform. I suspect that the latter has spent a lot of time in Aberdeen at the moment, though, with all the winds recently.

I am not sure but I suspect this will be one of the Pumas that Bond operate as part of the BP Jigsaw Porject. It would be black and yellow, which pretty much makes them unique for Pumas.

BP jigsaw was set up as a enhanced SAR system for Bp's offshore installations. On the aviation side it involves a hele at Aberdeen and a couple based on offshore installations. From past experience there are several PPRUNERs who fly for this outfit, so they may be able to provide more.

Wasn't it one of these that ended up swimming a few weeks back off Holland?

No, that was the Bristow aircraft which was used for the original Jigsaw trial (before the Jigsaw contract was eventually won by Bond). It was, however, an L2 in the black & yellow paint scheme, G-JSAR.

Charron, not sure what you think the big cock up was? Rapidly increasing cyclic control problems presumeably were what caused the crew to decide to get it on the ground or in the water immediately. They managed that, at night time, without any injuries. From the 200 word report that's out so far from the safety board, i can't see how anyone's got enough info to form any kind of critical opinion.

cock-up? OK Charron, we'll let this one slide but you're being pretty harsh considering what has been released to the public so far. If you know more, then share it with us. We are all impatient for information that could save the next aircraft. If you jumped to the conclusion that no AD's or tech bulletins from Eurocopter meant there was no mechanical problem, you are reaching a little far.

Maybe his cock up remark is addressed to the fact that zero out of 2 emergency life rafts inflated and they had to blow up a mini life raft that I assume was just supposed to be for the Crew. ALso 1.25 hrs to recover the survivors who were in the water ( albeit in survival suits ) sounds a bit on the long side.
