SAR Winchman Career Enquiry
Hello
I am wondering if anyone can share some information on the Career of a Winchman in a SAR helicopter. I am currently very interested in this particular career path. I am wondering about the requirements to become a winchman. the different places i could go to apart fro MCA or CHC to get information. How i might go around becoming a winchman, any qualifications i should have etc. I also wonder if its better to have some military experience prior, whether they would accept new recruits. Thank you |
I think your best bet would be to speak to the Royal Navy, or better, the RAF.

Try this page if you wish to work in Spain , they are hiring people for the national SAR service with AB 139 , S-61 and AS 365 helicopters .
Good luck. http://personal.telefonica.terra.es/web/helimer/ |
Hi
Do you have any medical experience, I think a lot of SAR winchcrew are State Registered Paramedics with the Health Proffesions Council |
Maverick,
I am pretty sure this was asked a while ago and a substantial thread developed. Use the search facility to find it. Helinut |

To be honest you are going to struggle to get a start as winchman without a military SAR background. There is non military guys how have been lucky to get the chance. Bristows when they had the MCA contract had the ability through FBH heliservces to put guys through the SARTU course. CHC isnt doing it YEAT! The majortity off bristows non military guys where Labourers who did public transport winching part time for there companys and state registery paramedics who spoke to the rite people and where able to start straight away unlike serving mil guys who have to wait a peroid before discharge. There will be chances but they will be few and unless you have a good medical background or join the one off the companys and push the rite people. Joinning the military is your best option at the moment. Good luck and stick with it.:) |
