Just bear in mind that whoever got the permission owns the flight manual supplement, so don't anyone dare use the paperwork without paying the dues .....................:p

There is/was a similar CAA approved supp to cover landings on raised helipads for the AS355. I believe it was done by European who are now part of Premiair too ;)

Perf A/WAT calculations - AS355 F1& F2

Before I sit down and figure out a way of how to put the various calculations into my pre-flt spreadsheet...has anybody already done it?

Thinking of using Excel to do the calculations/iterations.
Input the day's temperature and hey-presto the max WAT weight and OEI performance superimposed on my CofG graph.

Or something like that!!

Have a look at EasyWeigh on the aerotechuk.com website. Works out all your loading and performance for you and can be tailored to your aircraft type & fit. Then it prints your loadsheet for you. EasyPeasy !

I've done a similar calculation for a Bo105 and EC135 in EXCEL by interpolating the graphs based on 15C @ sea level and creating a lookup table with Pa and Temp as the parameters. If you want to have a look at it, Email me at - [email protected]

I'm trying to work out something like that right now - the W & B stuff is already done, with PA calculations - feel free to use them at www.electrocution.com/aviation

Twin Squirrel Ground Handling Equipment

Any recomendations for a single-'man' operated trolley for AS355.
Owner looking to move helo from FBO to own site - don't ask!

Helinut 18th August 2004 11:52

From my experience, there is only really one satisfactory answer and that is a TLC Helilift. Not cheap, and not problem free, but better than the rest.

Various other systems have been used by police units over the years. However, even before almost all of them got bigger toys they had virtually all moved to TLCs.

It is what the majority of UK outfiits who handle lots of heles seem to use too.

It has one additional advantage to you, as I detect that you are not keen to move from the FBO - it aint cheap!!

EESDL 18th August 2004 12:41

Many thanks for that...I've just got off the 'phone from them - the brochure's in the post, so to speak.
Can you think of any more expenses I can 'thwack' onto the owner's desk to discourage such a move.
I'm working down the list but any other items would be appreciated!!

is he moving it to his new office or home
steve

EESDL 19th August 2004 20:11

Steve
It's not the bloke you kindly offered to help during our open day but another 'owner' (non-pilot) who lives Elvington way. He wants to base it out of his farm. Can't blame him for trying, it's 30 mins total transit out of LBA everytime he wants to use it -
But if I tell him that it's 30K for a 'mover' he'll probably change his mind.
On past experience, where's a good place for Jet A1 in the area.
Price?
Rotors Running?
Convenience/Invoicing etc.....
Hope youe enjoyed the Heli Champs, would have loved to take up your kind offer of a spare seat but was otherwise engaged on that particular day!!

Brian it is then, Ta
Thanks for the offer, working though.
Anyhow, Mrs EESDL would not be happy if I went flying for pleasure rather than for work!

Why does Squirrel 'wiggle' ?

Great helicopter and love everything about it except landing which can make one look a complete twit. Everyone asks why it wiggles ? Anyone know ?

Vfrpilotpb 28th August 2004 15:29

I asked a pal of mine the exact same question, he is a CPL and used a twin Squirrel every day, he passed it over by saying he had never really tried to work out why, but he went on to say, it did make you look a little under-experienced.

But yet I watched an RAF FI and student land a single Squirrel and never saw the same wiggle, could it be big engine covers create dead spots when trying to come down slowly?

Steve76 28th August 2004 16:35

My understanding is that the tail boom becomes a lifting surface under the rotorwash. IE: Corianda effect

Later models of Astar had strakes to prevent this. Still wiggles thou...
Probably pilots with not enough coffee.

paco 28th August 2004 19:25

Just relax a lot more - you'll do a 5 ft hover smoothly quite soon

phil

ShyTorque 28th August 2004 21:15

Steve 76,

"Corianda effect"

Isn't that the "Turbulent lifting under the tailboom" one suffers after a good curry the night before? :\

Or did you really mean "Coanda effect"? :p

Devil 49 28th August 2004 21:21

My best but completely unscientific guess is that the low tail rotor placement causes it's rotor wash to interact with the ground, varys thrust efficiency. Add a horizontal stab that's at the margin of the main rotor down wash and you've got a lot of changes happening in the control trim position.

Good news, forget the tendency and fly the aircraft all the way down. Concentrate on no translation as you slowly descend and above all- don't try to feel for the ground- and it lands like any helicopter.
