Is the ATPL internationally recognised?
 

Hi All

First post here for a while

If one were to complete an ATPL course in the US, is it internationally recognised and permit you to fly in other countries? Does it supercede getting JAA/JAR conversions from FAA approved courses. Such as completing a CFII course in the US?

Just need to know what my options are...

As far as I know the JAA and FAA don't recognise each other licences, even if both are ICAO licences. This is a real shame! I think this is more like an "political issue". It says in the JAR (JAA) that different states have to have some kind of agreement how to recognise each other licences and as far as I know JAA and FAA haven't been able to find this kind of agreement. I think that here in Europe we are afraid that all flight training should go to the US if we recognised FAA licences......:\

What comes to the recognision of CASA etc. I'm not sure. If you want to get some more details about JAA and conversion/licencing have a look in JAR-FCL 2.

The UK CAA don't recognise anything. If you have a FAA ATPL, you would still have to do 13 exams!

Regarding your specific question. This topic has been discussed at length already so search away.

That being said. Most countries (except UK/JAA member states) recognise the ICAO ATPL but have bridging requirements and aeronautical minimums (hours). In Aus, I think its one (or possibly two) exams (air law, etc) and if you pass those and have >1500 hours helicopter experience & valid Aus medical, you've got yourself an Aus ATPL(H). The aircraft type ratings on your FAA licence should be converted to your Aus licence.

I got an FAA ATPL-H. I wanted to get my Canadian CPL done and had to do ALL their written tests (don't remember how many....). Both the US and Canada are ICAO member states......:hmm: The only thing you will always get credit for is flight time.

OK, so flight hours are accepted. That's good! Are the exams really that onerous? I guess if you're out of the habit they would be...
