Helicopter Home improvements

Right, Basically the rules on this thread are One improvement on any type that's realistically feasible and one improvement that gives ya a nice warm feeling.

R22, get rid of carb heat (injection?)

R22, factory fitted CD player.

Fly Safe
Hone

Ps pilot not english teacher
Pps Sorry for mentioning the R word

I agree completely!!

Lay off the 22, it is a tough little bird.

R22: doors that don't leak
R22: turbo-normalized for altitude

B206: wider/softer geart so training doesn't always feel like a rollover about to happen
B206: make it go faster!

S76A: make it a C+
S76A: make it a C+

R44: awfully nice machine to fly and train in!

R22 and R44:

Install a three blade rotorhead. Not only will the problems go away but I might even go away as well.

replace R22 4 potter with big 6 pot system, plus two more seats , well now we need a new name suggest R22/46, or wot about R44, now if we could just get a T/bine in there!

HOGE 1st April 2001 15:57

Give the S76A+ some power, a view when landing, comfortable seats, drink holders, (oh, we've got the drink holders..whoppee)

If it was that good, everyone would be doing it.

RW-1 1st April 2001 19:26

R22: Inflight stereo (not)

Actually I'd like to see the newer trigger grips as standard in it, with the 2-pos trigger for intercom/radio.

BK117: More tail rotor authority
A109: Seats that weren't made for Italian racing car drivers (same as their bl**dy cars!)

sprocket 3rd April 2001 16:00

A little gem, that stems from rumour only.

Improvement: B206. (a) A main rotor tie down latch that releases …before 50% N1 is obtained on start up … (well before)
(b) And/or a warning light that warns the pilot if the main rotor is tied/tethered.

Warm Feeling: B206. (a) In conjunction with the above improvement (b), a mechanical hand, attached to the instrument panel that will throttle the mongrel if he attempts to hit the start button while the warning light is illuminated … and … then if all that fails to prevent a start attempt …
(b) An automatic electronic door lock will “arm” so that when he finally gets out to untie the rotor he will be locked out of the helicopter, so that he can not possibly get back in to try another start until, of course, about half a million dollars is spent, to repair the damage from his first start attempt!

HOGE 3rd April 2001 16:46

Hey sprocket, how about a "remove before flight" streamer on the tie downs?
(Ducks quickly and runs for it!!....)

Wrong Password 3rd April 2001 16:58

Sprocket
Try an empty red-painted bean can over the cyclic when the tie downs are on. Only a COMPLETE idiot would try a start then.

sprocket 4th April 2001 05:16

HOGE : Yeah, I’d considered the streamer but there is the possibility that the potential culprit may be wearing dark sunglasses at that time and may be prevented from seeing anything in particular except for the blurred outline of the helicopter. :)
The other side of that is if he does a daily before a night flight (nightly?) in the same manner as his daytime daily, (probably from the crew room) then an alternative warning would be needed.
Maybe a good old-fashioned dose of vigilance, discipline and arse kicking would help but the “problem child” or the guy having a “bad hair day” will eventually slip through the safety net of training.

Wrong Password : Yep, to most people the bean can would be a help. Alas if it is the same idiot that has to put it on the cyclic, when finished his flying, then it will only be a matter of time before he will forget to even do that. http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/eek.gif

Sorry about the ramblings, trying not to get too far off the original thread subject.

RW-1 4th April 2001 17:51

RW-1's simple "Butt" elequant solution to your problem.

Pilot's seat has a retractable sharp spike that only retracts if the tiedowns are removed.

Or you could have it the other way, it stays retracted during start unless they are NOT removed hehe.

I leave it to the engineers to design the sensors, etc.

Butt the pilot should definately get the point if things are not set for start eh ? :)
