Sad, sad, sad . . .
 

My nipper, who's 2 at the end of January, has a dad who flies helicopters, knows the difference between "copter" and "prane", knows they live in "sky", and lives in the Vale of Pewsey - for those who don't know that's full of all sorts of helicopters at all times of day and night.

So, reading his aviation book to him the other day, he started saying "Nook, nook".

Turns out he wanted us to turn to the page with a Chinook on it.

Anyone else got small kids with a similar party trick ?

My little boy is 20 months old , and can spot a "copter" a good 30 seconds before dear old dad! He even knows if its me or not in the air. Had his first flight when he was 3 weeks old, well that is if you dont count flying his mum around when her contractions started, to keep them going, plastic bag on seats and all!

I also have model helicopters and planes at home and the first thing he wants to play with is the copters, he also prefers helicopter magazines to winnie the poo. He only likes planes if they do aerobatics, and when asked which he prefers its always the copter! (well trained)

A future pilot is born.

My young daughter many years ago as a toddler
said "Daddy gop gop." Imitating that that was transitting overhead. Nuff said

By Golly, the littl'un knows a real helicopter when he sees one....skids aren't really for kids it seems.

I took my nephew to an airshow years ago...he was 8-9 years old....while watching the events and flybys....he commented to me "gee, when I grow up I want to be a helicopter pilot!" My sister looked him in the eye and very motherly remarked...."well son, I don't think you can do both!"

This didn't come from one of my kids, but one of those snotty nosed brats on a tour of my squadron. He seemed to enjoy the multimedia presentation, but kept asking when we were going to see the "Rescue Sausage". I just thought he was a few bricks short of a dozen, so didn't pay much attention.

The helicopters we fly are H46's, but they're painted bright yellow, kinda like the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile. I thought maybe this was what the kid meant.

In Canada everything Federal is bilingual so the helicopter has painted on the side "RESCUE SAUVETAGE".

Snotty nosed kid just read it wrong.

When 2, my son could differentiate between 'planes and 'copters. Was overawed by a 'Spitsfire'(sic) display at Shuttleworth and could spot Jodels, 'Robin plane daddy'at a similar age. Am I pleased or what?

Make the most of it, you lot. 18yr old daughter just wants the money from the business, 16yr old son will wash aircraft for pocket money, but otherwise couldn't give a tinkers!!

In our case, sad in more than one sense. Our lad spent 3 of his first 4 years at a base where Light Dove Love-Jets (GR7s) grudgingly shared the airspace with our Chinooks and Pumas, and could tell the difference between a resident and a visiting Tornado without looking out the window. His recce skills improved to the stage where during our tour in Borneo, 2 times out of 3 he could tell the difference between a Singaporean 205 and our 212s just by ear. On Microsoft Crimson Skies he wipes the floor with aplomb. A natural in the making...

Only snag is: he's colourblind.

No wuckers, colour blindness was challenged and knocked out as an issue for Australian licences a few years ago.

My little champ calls it them "toppers"
The other two are less inclined but my middle girl will gladly climb all over to help with a daily. Might be useful when she get bigger than 4.
They all have a ball while flying. Absolute naturals. No throwing up or screaming....just peals of laughter and crys of lower, lower.....
I wonder where they get that from. :D

Straight up?! Right, that does it - we're moving. Fed up with grey skies, grey buildings and grey people already, and we've only been back 2 months!

Seriously, that is good news - I've been deliberately down-playing the flying game with him ever since we found out. If the job-hunting here continues to show no more progress after another couple of months, I'll have a long hard look (again) at the whys and wherefores of moving southwards. The boss would take very little convincing - she's already got the asthma back, and those memories of good times in Perth, Brisbane, Cairns, Sydney, Ballarat, the Great Ocean Road and even the NW corner of Melbourne are powerful persuaders.

Thanks for cheering me up - I can do with that these days.

Whilst out here on exchange in '93 had to live in a nice little beach front pad overlooking Jervis Bay (Thanks Pusser....!!)
Daughter at under 1 knew "hacoo" from the A4's (Maybe because they regularly filled the front window cliff top ht!!)She could spot the A44's on a bombing run at 6 miles.
Now back at the 'Bay' and the A4''s go home for good on Friday!!

Took the kids around the Buckeburg helicopter museum many years ago. While trying to think up an answer to little daughter's(6) question on why some have skids and some have wheels, big son(8) pipes up and says "They have skids so the stuntmen can hang onto them".
