I'm not disagreeing with you, merely responding to your question 'who said it was?' However even with a frozen ATPL(H) you would still need to log the required hours on type and complete an MCC course before your ATPL was unfrozen. So why not initially do the CPL(H) exams later on complete the IR, log the required hours and do your MCC, voila ATPL(H)??? H. |
ATPL (H) v CPL (H) JAA
OK then, whats the real benefit of the ATPL (H) JAA against the CPL? YES I know you can multi crew & hold an IR, but need to gain the rating within 3 yrs, but if only flying VMC on single op's/ charter work, isn't it a bit unnecessary? How many of you have found it to be a money pit?
Another one for you, holding a CPL (new type from Dragon) could you not then undertake an IR at a later date? I have been thinking about going down there myself. Have been looking into the immigration website, but I have just bit too low score on their test. How do you think an european with a +1000hrs FAA CPL + IFR pilot will do down there? How is the jobmarket? And how did you land a job down there? off airport |
Have a colleauge who is back in NZ after going through the rigmoral of getting onto the JAA 'hamster wheel' and he is having trouble getting his new, improved 'you bueat' qualification's recognised by the fed's in NZ.

JAR ATPL(H) groundschool entry requirements
Question regarding JAR stuff:
I'm trying to work out exactly what the requirements for doing the CPL (or indeed ATPL) groundschool are, beyond a PPL. LASORS seems to indicate that you need to be ok to start your CPL (155 hours as PPL, >= 50 hours PIC), but it's not terribly clear - it seems like it could also be read to say that all you need to start the theoretical stuff is a PPL, so long as you meet the hour requirements when you start the CPL flight training. The reason I ask is that I'm hoping to get my PPL around the end of the year, and I'd like to get started on the ATPL ground school (which are reputed to take about 12 months) while I build my hours, ideally over the same 12 months (eep!:ooh:). Since the groundschool isn't terribly expensive, compared to everything else (around £2k-ish), this would allow me to spread the costs a bit, as well as get to an employable state quicker. Obviously, it rather depends on the entry requirements for ATPL(H) groundschool... Anyone have any ideas? |
Yup, that's about right. You need to have had all your ground exams passed before you sit your CPL skills test.
As far as I know there are no entry requirements (other than a PPL for modular route) but the ground school usually want to be satisfied that you can cope with the maths and physics aspects. If you have O or A levels in these subjects you should be OK. Cheers Whirls |
So, the moment I've got my PPL, I could tootle off and sign up for a ground school, assuming my maths and physics skills are ok (knew that physics degree would come in handy one day:p)?
Also, are the hour requirements for CPL what you have to have to do the CPL skills test or for entry into the flight training course? i.e. could I count my CPL training towards the total (assuming a flight school who were prepared to take me at, say, 130 hours)? |
As I understand it, there is nothing to stop you starting your ATPL groundschool now. But be aware that there is a clock that starts ticking when you pass your ATPL's and you have to complete the rest of the Licence (ie flying, experience and IR) within a certain time frame. Others would be able to advise on what that time frame is.

I seem to remember 5 years from when you pass the final ATPL exam, or 3 years if you do the CPL ones? I guess there's a time limit between writing the first exam and the last as well?

as far as i know must have ppl before you start cpl/atpl for cpl modular the route i took once you have ppl you can start ground school pass all the exams. for the skills test you must have 155 hrs with 50 of them pic.

My understanding is that the 155 hours (with appropriate PIC and cross country requirements) are required in order to commence a CPL flying course. The course is 30 hours (35 hours if you don't have a night rating).
The killer here though is that you cannot commence the night rating until you have 100 hours post PPL qualification. This means, in my case, that I cannot start the night rating until very near the end of my CPL flying training. Nuts! Cheers Whirls |

Relax dear, they are only entry requirements.
Do the PPL Can start the CPL ATPL GS immediate on issue of PPL license if sums and grasp of Queens English up to speed. Need 185hrs TT to start CPL SKILLS TEST and passes in GS exams (9 or 13 depending on which route >> CPL or ATPL) Can't get a night qualification until you have 100hrs after PPL passed (so if you take 90hrs you need another 100hrs after that so pushing back the date of your 170a test and the CPLH ST. h-r;) I bet Whirlygig now says something like "Isn't that what I just said???". If so then I was replying to Mr Confused from Oogle. |

I was chatting to a guy the other day, he posts here too and he suggested taking the ATPL(H) in Norway. Apparently, the test is in English, is distance learning, is more geared to Helicopters than 737's and is acceptable throughout Europe. He was under the impression that the ATPL(H) is then frozen for 7 years, giving enough time to get the relevant experience.
Not sure if there's any advantage to this route, but can anyone confirm or deny? |
I'm confused too.
1. Get PPL 2. You can start studying for CPL/ATPL exams 3. Build hours up to 150(?) hours (including all the P1 requirements) mean while..... 4. Sit exams and pass them. 5. Do CPL flying course. 6. Write CV and post. 7. Do IR or get sponsored for IR and get NS job. Reality check - no North Sea jobs, build hours to instructor course (250hrs P1?) 8. Do instructors course 9. Get job as instructor 10. Wait for NS job or build up to onshore position. 11. If going for ATPL do IR and keep it current or resit ATPL exams if out of time. Key points. Decide on where you want to work (CPL or ATPL?) Avoid studying for the exams whilst taking flying training Look very carefully at the pennies.(FI or IR or both?) Keep a sharp eye on any time limits for passing exams/ flying courses. (no one wants to do ATPLs twice) Find and bribe some lucky stars (for job hunting) The North Sea job market is highly variable and no one can put their hand on their hearts and say jobs will be available in 6 months time, let alone 2 years time. (Full ATPL-H course around 5000$) They also have a IR conversion course witch cost around 20.000$ if you hold a valid ICAO IR license. It will cost around 4300$ extra if you dont hold a JAA B206 type rating. This is a ground school only, witch is working together with other schools for the practical tests.This test are done by EHC at the same airport, and they are using 5-15 hours prep for JAA CPL-H test, depending on skills. I can see that someone on this forum is a little confused about the answers. Easy answer. ATPL-H theory is frozen 7 years. You have to take the IR practical within 3 years. You can take the complete ATPL-H theory after you become a rated pilot. (PPL) This is the way I am going to take my conversion. :) |
