Sabre, Thanks for that. Mine is clearly carbon cloth inside with a brown material visible in the drilled holes. Probably the aramid. I think you are probably right that the 'kevlar' ebay ones are the same.
Limit state. I saw these and they do look good value but I would not buy without seeing/trying on. The seller appears to have a constant supply of these helmets and headsets/intercoms. I thought it looked too cheap for a new good quality helmet and so elected to go for an Alpha. I tried a friends Alpha first to check the fit. Check his feedback and ask a previous buyer or two if they are any good. |
Helmet Source
Where do people get their helmets from now? I used to get my HGU33's from Flightsuits in the States but they can now only supply domestic markets.
The HGU kevlar shell helmet is the lightest (have compared it on scales to an Alpha, they quote them as the lightest) and a good fitting comfortable helmet. They make the SPH series look and feel like a WW2 tank helmet. Also with factory fitted ANR were only about $1500 Aus. The Australian distributor quotes an Alpha as $4500 with factory fitted ANR. Having used ANR for the last 10 years or so I wouldn't use a helmet without it. Does anybody know of another souce of HGU33's? |
Why not get a friend to buy one in the US and send it to you?
It seems that several companies in the US have stopped shipping internationally for some reason, but there are ways around it! |
I just bought a very nice "new" SPH4, yellow Imron paint...double visor...NVG compatible visor guard....flex boom, electrotet mike...all new interior....stretch cord....819 USD. Only "used" part is the shell....it is US military surplus. Watched it being assembled...custom fitted....and beer while you wait.
Very satisfied with the product. Helicopterhelmets.com is the seller....helicopter pilot with a business on the side. |
Ooops, just read this:
Helmets and other items under the US Government shipping restriction list are not exportable- if you purchase one of those items, you are guaranteeing that the item will not be sent out of the US. |
Terrorist and helmets vrs the US
PMSL what an amusing thing that helmets wont be sent out of the us.....the last a terrorist would want is a boney on his lug that half fits him and rattles around (do they think that they are that smart to order a right size lid for EM?????)
had a look on ebay and notice theres some nice Chinese ones there dont know how good they are. Another mob is Gallett or CHC Australia there on the web as well. CHC have second hand ones as well... |
Hemet Source?
Is that something you put on your helmet to make it more palatable?:O |
Helmet condiments?
No it's something you drain out of your helmet after a long day.:8

Bet this guy was happy to be wearing a helmet. Crewman in an Iroquois that suffered engine failure at high speed while low level, nothing to do but try to flare it and reduce the impact speed. The helo rolled over and the crewmans retaining strap was long enough to allow him to fall outside the cargo compartment with the helo ending up partly on his head/helmet. After undoing the chin strap he was lifted out with fairly minor injuries. |
Helmet too quiet
Hi,
I have a Gallet 250 helmet with ANR which I bought while training in Oz. I have used it fine with and without the ANR powered up in a B47, H269s and in an R44 although with the latter it was hard to discern what the passengers in the back were saying, however at the time I just put this down to a setting on the comms system as I could hear the instructor in the left seat fine. I'm now in the UK and when I flew an R22 beta II I couldn't hear anything from the instructor and had to land and change to a headset. Does anybody have any experience with this problem and know how to solve it. Having flown almost all of my student hours with my helmet I'm not keen on using headsets. Cheers Nick |
I've had a LH250 Gallet for about 2 months now but without the ANR and have no trouble hearing passengers in any seat of our R44's. I have used one in a R22 for a few hours and also had no dramas.

Cannot hear the pax?
Sounds like the perfect helmet.:D Have to get me one of those....:} |
lol!
Must be the English 22's! :{ |
Helmet too quiet - problem
Motorbike too powerfull - no way! Earn too much money - Pay for some of my endorsements... Well the instructor was using the cans supplied with the machine, so I guess it should be fairly easy to compare the two and see if this could be a problem. Nick (poor low hour pilot) |
I agree with Mr. Selfish it likely that its the mike.
You either need to swap mike on the other headsets in the helicopter or swap your mike so that its compatible with the other headsets. It usually easy to change the mic itself so if you can loan one of a spare headset and install it on your Gallet you could see if that works. I have a Gallet ANR helmet myself which I have used for years with few problems. |
Thanks, I will give it a try if I'm allowed to pinch a mike for a bit.
Cheers Nick :ok: |
Good advert for Alpha and for wearing bone domes for heli ops...

Omega+ helmet from Comunica
Does anybody has experience with this helmet?
http://www.comunica.co.uk/helmet_html/omega+_1.htm I'm looking to replace my SPH-4 and ran across this one surfing the web. Seems quite attractive pricewise and it's made in the UK. |
I hope their helmets are more reliable than their website is when I tried it........
If the "from" doesn't hide too many essential options, then price seems great |
