Hot starts in a recip? slickstart
I noticed a news item on Rotorhub talking about a new technology they are putting in the Raven II's. It supposedly protects against hot starts, helps start fouled engines and in colder weather. My question is though how does a hot start in a recip occur? Anybody with experience in the new ravens have opinions on how this works?

HOT STARTS in a piston banger is normally associated with trying to start a already hot fuel injected engine, which may in some cases require some hefty finger gymnastics and the use of extra hands if available (In airplanes anyway). I expect it to be the same problem for piston helicopters (I fly one daily, but no injection engine)

The new Raven has the same configuration as a MD 300.
It is not equipped with any additional start assistance. Starting from both hot and cold - so far has been easy and reliable, particularly from cold - very impressed ! Priming is required only from cold for 3 to 5 seconds. A hot start is just a push on the mixture when the engine fires. The 24 v system provides for a far faster engine turnover on startup. Happy |
