James Bond Helicopter Stunt
 

Would the pilot who did the stunt with the NOTAR on the latest James Bond film please step forward for the awards ceremony....

for those of you who haven't seen the film yet, a NOTAR (I'm not familiar with them, but it looked like a MD600N) 'flown' by Bond was dropped out of the back of a high-flying, burning Anotonov.... rotors stationary, engine not running....

Miraculously by the time the machine approaches the ground (and just in time, of course), Bond manages to start the engine, get the rotors turning and stops himself and his girl from a messy impact on the ground.

Fantastic stunt - if that pilot could share his or her secrets, the safety of light helicopters could be transformed. Thanks to 007, low rotor RPM problems are a thing of the past;)

And the film? A little disappointing, the Bond films have lost some of their charm.

Mark Wolff flew the 600. Aren't computer graphics wonderful? ;)
Pete Barnes flew the 900.

Its still a great film! I thought the MD900 flying was a bit naff! I mean, all that power an all! should have just blasted straight up!

Anyway, gonna ask MD600 driver if we can have a go at the 600 stunt over the weekend. Weather permitting of course! he he.

Probably not unconnected with the fact that the woman in charge of the visual effects department on the film flies helicopters herself.

And Bond managed to recover only using cyclic - if the woman in charge flys helicopters it wouldn't have been too difficult to show him flying it properly would it?

Apart from that it is very worthy of the 007 genre, it has just moved into the 21st century with some slightly arty (some would say irritating) camera work. Excellent swordfight by the way, Errol Flynn eat your heart out.

The only crap bit was the kite surfing off the glacier tidal wave - a little bit more thought could have produced a less far-fetched escape for Bond.

Halle Berry looks fabulous but if you want to see more then rent Monsters Ball (the one she got an Oscar for) - the acting is not Oscar worthy IMHO but the sight of her with her kit off wins a prize in my book!!!

In the second terminator film, the baddie terminator fires a machine gun with one hand while hovering a helicopter. they must have been more thorough than the Bond director - if you look carefully, the terminator grows another arm for the collective!

Too true. Personally I have my doubts about the bit where he flips the car back onto its wheels after skidding along on the roof. That's never worked for me.

It almost makes you think that they just make this stuff up for effect.

I note that it was an Explorer they used and not one of those old fashioned things with bits spinning on the end of a boom! :D

Bond films seem to be getting more and more action/special effects orientated, and less of the clever thinking spy with a smart mouth. I dont mean to start the "old arguement" but they seem to be getting more American and less British by the film. Mind you, playing to your largest audience always makes sound economic sense!

My personal helicopter manoeuvre favourite is the Squirrel in a recent Bond flim (Tomorrow Never Dies??) that parks itself vertically nose down and uses the rotor disc to chop all sorts of things up as it slowly progresses toward the heros. Surely you would get a sore neck from looking up through the overhead window wouldn't you?

The stunt in question kinda spoilt the film for me.

The film had some awesome scenes...sword fight springs to mind. it had some of the best Bond bits ever, alas it also had some of the worst!!

All in all 5/10.

But then I still prefer tail rotors!! :D

I remember in Goldeneye, when the train was about to blow up, the villians made their escape in a turbine equipped R-22. :rolleyes: I hope they didnt plan on going all the way to Cuba in it.

Best fillum fying I have seen is in the movie "Deadly Adventure" (I think its called) with Larry Hagman. I think it's from the 80's - check it out if you haven't seen it - crap movie, but great movie flying.

Any other movies to add? Was there ever a thread on movie flying?

I remember one episode of Miami Vice (many moons ago) where our erstwhile heroes are flying over the Everglades in a Jetranger with suitably trendy music to boot. The camera shot then changes to inside the helicopter looking out and inadvertently picks up it's own shadow on the water below, except that now it's now no longer a Jetranger but a Bell 47!! A couple of twists in the plot later, the self same Jetranger gets blown up, all very well in keeping with the spirit of the series except that right at the moment of the explosion it miraculously turns into a Hughes 500 (probably an old one hanging from a crane). My brothers and sisters used to think I was weird for noticing such things. :D

Good chopper movies?? The recent 'We were soldiers' with Mel Gibson had some pretty dramatic shots.

I did a film with Marc Wolff (Flying Pictures) in Hungary in '99 Spy Game. As far as I know we flew from Pakistan to china and back to rescue Brad Pitt and we only had the 44 gallon aux tanks.
Hows that for economical driving?
I agree with the note about using a 350 as a circular saw, bit daft that one even for a layman to watch.

Anyone remember that film (Eathquake I think) where a large dam was about to burst? The main character was flying a Gazelle (lovely beige colour), one internal shot showed them hacking around the sky acting quite well with the throttle back and the rotor brake on! Must have been towing.

I saw it yesterday, the Idea that the Cubans and the North Koreans are on the cutting edge in anything is enough to make me puke. As for Hallie Berry, give me a break, yea she did pick up an oscar, but for the most part her movies are not very good. She reminds me of Marylin Monroe, good to look at but a few lose on the acting part. Then again its a tradition with Bond women to be of that sort. Besides since they got rid of the Walter PPK, its been down hill.
