Hoist cable fatigue failure report
|
If you don't look after your cable, it won't look after you.

Don't recall anything similar with our cables in the 60s-70s, but we always stowed with the leaf-spring shut off. Initially, we had occasional 'bird-caging' from cable overlays if the cable came in off-tension. That was sorted fairly quickly with the Lebus drum, which 'directed' the layering.

There still seems to be some “dark arts” associated with hoists.
15 years ago I attended a “Hoisting Conference” for EMS operators. The take away was: “The guy that could make ‘good’ hoist cables has retired”. You’d think the tech would be locked down and reliable in 2021. Due multiple issues with stoppages - hoisting operations on one modern type in Australia are currently suspended. |

T&S - ... plus cash, perhaps ? I was 'expert' opinion at a 555 meeting at Westlands to consider the winch fit for the Navy Lynx. We had three on offer - Lucas, Breeze and. AEG/telefunken. The AEG stood out by a mile and the Lucas was quite unsuitable. The Breeze was usable but a 'dog's dinner' installation. I made the obvious recommendation but the decision went to the Breeze. From memory, the costs were in the order of (say) 3k for the Lucas, 6k for the Breeze and 10k for the AEG. Not an unreasonable decision one might think. However, the operational requirement was for an occasional use fit which, ultimately, meant purchasing a greater number of the 'cheaper' option. How unusual ! |
