2 light choppers down in Kuala Lumpur
 

Ampang/Taman Melawait, (north northeast of KLCC)

2 Guimbal Cabri G2s crashed in this area mid-day Sunday. A blue-painted G2 chopper was videoed descending rapidly vertically to an area near a school. A red-painted G2 helo is observed in the same continuous video clip approaching the crash site at mid-altitude, and then circles the area for a short time, completing a reversal of track, and then commences a steep descent towards the ground and impacts as well.

The report is of mid-air if so, quite a time between the impact that takes out one helo, and the loss lof the 2nd helicopter.

Initial reports of 2 fatalities in total.

Its a solid little chopper, with better survivability than many. but planet earth wins tussles like that.

If it was a mid-air then planet Earth is not the proximate cause, just a destination.

Looking at the photos, the red one shows little damage. Pure speculation follows: if it was a mid-air, it's possible the red helicopter's skids came in contact with the blue helicopter's main rotor blades. In the video it sure sounded like there was something messed up with the blue helicopter's main rotor. The blue helicopter is, sadly, doomed. Meanwhile the red helicopter makes a rapid precautionary landing. Perhaps someone more skilled at video analysis can determine if the left skid was still attached to the red helicopter as it flew past.

In case you compare the both tracks on FR24 that may be the case.

Formation flying takes training by an experienced person(s). Careful planning including agreement on airspeed, altitude and separation. Practice. Concentration. If you've flown formation in the military you have probably done all of these. I have seen a few good pilots with no training in formation flying take a shot at it. They take a lot for granted. I don't participate. Its a skill, a trained maneuver that needs careful consideration.
