"Flexible Mission" providers
I am curious to other helicopter pilots thoughts on this latest trend of service operators trying to become middle men between helicopter operators and helicopter pilots.
Will it drive down pilot pay long term? Will full time pensionable jobs become obsolete if the trend develops? What is their cut for each pilot provided? Who pays for keeping pilots current: Medicals/ Types/ IR/ Recurrency? Would be interested to hear your thoughts.... |

It wouldn't suit everyone but life can be enjoyable and financially rewarding to work as a contractor if your personal circumstances allow and you get your tax situation sorted. Some people need the 'security' of a full-time, pensionable job but some thrive on variety and well-paid short term contracts with plenty of time off.
|
The idea seems the same as the agencies that supply pilots to third world airlines. The contract rates can be rewarding but the agency takes it cut from the customer. In practice they will not help in any disputes in either pay our performance and when that particular contract is finished you start again.
|
So their job is basically just to forward on Resumes, take a hefty cut of other peoples work and take no responsibility.
Hopefully the gig economy doesn't become the new norm in Helicopters. The overheads to qualify and stay current are too high to make it feasible. With people fighting for small scraps of work, its no wonder pilots are flocking to the airlines. |
Call me cynical but it would appear that there are companies who look like 'Flexible Mission Providers' but are basically nothing more than agents. If these 'mission providers' were so great, and had a vast reach and available jobs, you'd think they'd advertise at least some of them on their website, and not just their own positions they need staff for. Can't see it doing anything for the big companies who probably don't want to pay a pilot cost and an agent fee. Not when they have their own HR divisions anyway.

My LinkedIn feed (slop trough?) is filled with little more than glitzy HR/Recruiter/Staffing schlock. Has any pilot here ever gotten a job through these middlefolk, or heard tales of anyone who has? Or is it all some scam to bolster their interweb hitpoints stockpile?
