Baby born in-flight on Helicopter
If you haven't seen the UK press today; here's a story on a baby being born on a Sea King enroute from the Isles of Scilly.

It’s on the BBC news website. I think the aircraft is definitely not a Sea King though.... |
Yes, the BBC article is above. Differing news articles show photos of a Sea King, S92 and an AW139.
Thanks to the UK press, we have no idea what type they were flying. |
Newquay cab - S92 LZ |
The picture of the aircraft on RMKs link is clearly a S-92 - perhaps the page has been updated. It's all over the local news in Kernow - mum was officiating at a friends wedding in the Scillies and went into early labour after the nuptials, she and hubby had travelled down from Inverness to Scilly so the baby had clearly decided it didn't want to be born in Jockistan:) and opted for Cornwall instead.

Born on Helicopter in flight? Meh. Conceived on Helicopter in flight.....I’m impressed! |
Dispatch a SAR helicopter for someone in labour? What's wrong with St Mary's Hospital? What a waste of UK taxpayer money.
|
There may have been complications which necessitated the flight otherwise there were plenty of closer hospitals to go to. |
Where are the nearest hospitals to the Scillies??????Oh yes, Cornwall - Treliske to be precise and that is where they went.

Born in an S92... Now that's an incredibly harsh way to be thrown out of that cozy womb! I keep wondering if that little person will throughout its life be particularly sensitive or maybe particularly resistant to noise exposure...

Childbirth onboard was pretty common flying EMS in Canada's North country. Actually had one lady give her helicopter born son the middle name "Chopper". Kokopenace was the last name I believe.
|
At least the child didn't get named after the manufacturer! "C'mere Sikorsky!" I believe there is one Chinese child named after my crewman of the time after he was delivering the baby as we landed. The little chap didn't quite hang on until his mother could be put in the waiting ambulance. She'd earlier had major problems with her labour, obviously my ropey flying sorted out the lumps. |
I am temped to say little Torrance will have vast problems in his future flying career to keep the number of landings equal to the number of take-offs. Cheers SLB |
