Aston Martin Volante Vision
Hi all,
First thing last thursday morning - I wondered into Hall 3 and came across Aston Martin (shaken but not stirred lol ) booth. They are entering the aerospace business albeit with flying car eVTOL with the Vision Concept. referencing the scale...where will this be able to park in these bustling urban centres that will demand this type of transport?

Every man and his dog seem to be producing a flying car concept, few seem to have a clue how to make it work beyond a pretty model.

with the front props below the airfoil, they deliberately miss the lift- advantages of air been blown above a lifting surface looks cool so, but flimsy attachments |
Also, I don't see any space for batteries/hybrid motor.

It will need a VERY good aircon system, under that glass, and there goes 90% of the battery power, while waiting for the butler to serve the pre-departure champagne.

Sadly, I think that sums up the level of attention to detail being invested in the technical, commercial and operational aspects of the entire eVTOL sector to date. Vast amounts of money being spent, little knowledge carried over from existing VTOL manufacturers, operators and regulators. You can’t develop viable products like this with money alone... I won’t quote what Bruno Guimbal said at his RAeS lecture about these things...but he was absolutely right. CRAN |
There were several flying car designs floating around in Farnborough Week, this one collected most of the media attention simply because it was Aston Martin.
I noted that most of them seemed to be quite agricultural in design in that they might prove to be efficient and sleek grass cutters. There were unguarded spinning lift blades everywhere and perhaps the prototypes should pick up names like Grim Reaper. They would all make a real mess of the local Waitrose car park, even assuming there was a big enough landing space in the first place. Personally I have trouble getting my Bentley in those narrow parking spaces. Dream on stuff. |
Car designers love churning out funky concepts, then once the engineers and beancounters get hold of it something far more mundane gets spat out of the production line.
An autonomous aircraft takes a little more engineering than a 4-wheeler. There is lot of air between a great idea and a working prototype, a bit like Mr Musk that comes up with hyperloop. pats himself on the back and the lobs it at engineers to try make it work. |
Number one issue to fix, safety, they are facing so many issues that have already been solved or mitigated in the helicopter industry
Tell me what happen when a bird goes through those cute front propellers? Just what we need another PR concept ridiculing a brand name, |
Which road is that intended to operate from? Looking at the scaled size of it, both carriageways of the M1?

Just a way for Aston-Martin to get lots of media exposure without spending much money.
On the other hand, think about other recent ventures into the aircraft sector by auto OEMs that involved significant money. The most obvious being Honda's light jet.
