Weird Night-time Chopper Activity, Worcs

This is probably really dumb of me, but I was recently staying in Worcestershire, about four miles from Tewkesbury. I was woken on 29/07 at about 0300 by helicopters going over, very low. I staggered out to look, and the main culprits were two heavy types (sorry, I'm not a rotorhead!), lit, with a Chinook flying between them, with no lights.

They (or something equally noisy) went round in roughly the same circular pattern for about an hour.

I don't know the area. This is probably a daily occurrence. But I was intrigued - once the "WTF??" effect had worn off; on the first pass, those babies were so low the windows rattled. I've seen a few helicopters in my time, but never that close to Mother Earth.

What were they doing, please?
