Helicopter crashed into home in Orlando - WFLA News Channel 8
ORLANDO, FL (WFLA) - A helicopter crashed into a home in Orlando Sunday afternoon causing a fire, WESH reported. The crash happened near Alameda Street and Edgewater Drive in Northwest Orlando. The Orlando Fire Department confirmed that the pilot didn't survive the crash. Fire officials told WESH that the helicopter crashed into a 2-story attached garage apartment at about 2:16 p.m. The fire crews were at the scene within minutes and the fire was under control. Firefighters entered the heavily damaged home and found the pilot dead, WESH reported. FAA officials said the helicopter was a Robinson R44. They haven't released any information about the flight's destination and the pilot's identity. Stay with WFLA for more on this developing story. |
How uncanny, and surreal. I am staying in Crowne Plaza hotel less than a third of a mile away with SWMBO, my sister and her husband and some friends.
At roughly the time of the accident we were outside in the pool area eating pizza and my Brother-in-law asked about the loud noise from the R-44 flying overhead, (he is an airline pilot from the UK), I explained that it was blade slapping and then told him how pilots can avoid it. I even went onto explain that it does the industry no good with pilots going around making noise like that and they should try to avoid making it. I have no way of judging the exact time, but it was between 2 and 2:30 local, therefore, I am assuming this could the same helicopter. |

According to reports 3 dead. Sad news.
Investigators said the helicopter, a Robinson R44, took off from HQ Aviation, LLC at the Orlando Executive Airport. HQ is a local helicopter training school and helicopter hire that operates out of a hangar at the airport. |
R44 Pilot Identified.....
ORLANDO — Three people who died when a helicopter crashed into an unoccupied guest home near downtown Orlando have been identified as a central Florida businessman, his wife and their friend.
Orlando police officials on Monday identified the deceased as pilot Bruce Teitelbaum; his wife, Marsha Khan; and their friend, Harry Anderson. Teitelbaum was executive director of a Volusia County-based paper shredding and recycling company. The helicopter crashed Sunday afternoon in a neighborhood of large, historic homes. Police say only three people were onboard and they aren’t looking for anyone else. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause. The helicopter took off from the nearby Orlando Executive Airport. FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen has said the Robinson R44 helicopter flew about two miles before it crashed. |
Can't back it up with a reliable printed source, but apparently the pilot called the tower and asked to return for landing but did not respond to the subsequent clearence. Will be interesting to hear more about when some solid info starts to appear.

Reproduced from RHOG. The pilot is reported to have been experiencing vibrations as he called to request an RTB, and "one witness reported that the helicopter's main rotor blades broke apart as it descended through the trees." Questions inevitably being asked by the RHC operator community given the latest blade AD.

If that is the blade that caused the crash, the fracture point is not at the suspect stress riser location. Does that mean the whole blade is prone to stress cracks across the chord? Or is that even the correct blade? Or was there another cause entirely?
I'm not feeling super duper flying around on my -7 blades these days. Even after I get them back from the body shop with their precision stress riser elimination operation performed by Bud, the best bondo man in the county. |
Excuse a non rotary guy, but it does seem many of the accidents referred to in the press and on Pprune relate to R22 and R44 helicopters. I am aware of the low energy rotor issue, but is there any suggestion that Robinsons are inherently unsafe - or will no one comment in case R....s sue them. hat, coat............

the R44 is the most produced civil helicopter in the world for years.
all the accidents are not reported in the press or here, the day after this one, it was a 206L1 ( 2 deads) and two days before it was a 350/H125 (4 deads). P.S : A recent study shows that Robinson should have between 143 and 165 full time lawers to sue all the people saying bad things about their products. ;) |

Just a thought: IF the pilot was descending already, (hypothesis: undertaking a "land immediately" decision if he was getting a serious control / engine / vibe problems??) THEN it would not be surprising that, going "through trees," his rotor blades upon striking the trees suffered sufficient damage to fail/fracture. The witness report is imprecise enough to allow for a number of interpretations. RIP. :( |
There is audio of pilot requesting to return to airport. In my opinion, you can hear vibrations in background.
