Air Ambulance forced to divert due to docs having a barbie

Scottish air ambulance had to abort a helipad landing due to docs having a barbecue

Medics grilled over barbecue blunder that forced hospital helipad to shut | UK | News | Daily Express

John Eacott 5th Jun 2013 10:06

The aircraft was approaching the hospital last Thursday night when a crewman pointed out there were junior medical staff cooking food on the barbecue just yards from the landing spot.
Ok...... but

The potential hazard was staff having a barbecue outside their *accommodation, which is about 50 yards from the landing pad.
For real? 40 or 50 yards away and the crew diverted? Maybe there's more to it than the hospital press release, but I'd have been in there snaffling a snag or three for the trip home ;)

SilsoeSid 5th Jun 2013 11:51

Looking at the site on google maps, I wonder if the same would have happened if there was a BBQ in the private gardens that are closer to the helipad than the doctors accommodation. Even if they were right on the pad, anything wrong with getting them to put the BBQ out?

Why do I get a feeling this was a fuel & opening hours issue more than a BBQ smokey issue?

The aircraft was approaching the hospital last Thursday night ....

...The helicopter flew to Oban airport and undertook a planned refuelling, from where the patient was transferred to hospital by road ambulance.

Remember that they are north of Hadrians Wall and Picts at that............:)

heliwanab 5th Jun 2013 12:10

Maybe the junior docs misheard and thought Oscar Charlie was coming in??
They travel with lots of steaks in board if memory serves :) :)

SASless 5th Jun 2013 14:51

40-50 Yards....in my country that would put them clear into the next Neighborhood!:E

Now how did the Eagled Eyed Crewman tweak to their being "Junior Medical Staff"?

There is a possibility to get fuel, also out of hours, but you have to know how.:E

Happy landings

Should of invited the heli crew to the BBQ:ok:

SilsoeSid 5th Jun 2013 19:40

The system for measuring length in the United States customary system is based on the inch, foot, yard, and mile, which are the only four customary length measurements in everyday use.

Is that "....in my country " or should it be, '....on my planet' ?
;)

I do not think that SAsless's post was read with the same intent as to which it was written.

I do not think that SAsless's post was read with the same intent as to which it was written.
You sure about that?

For the Not Knowing....Yards here are Gardens there!
On this planet... "In North America, a yard can be any part of a property surrounding or associated with a house or other residential structure, usually separate from a garden (where plant maintenance is more formalised). A yard will typically consist mostly of lawn or play area. The yard in front of a house is referred to as a front yard, the area at the rear is known as a backyard."

A yard there is not a garden here :p

Then again, in reference to plant maintenance, in S. America I hear the Brazilian Ladies have yards as opposed to gardens......... :E

Far,

I have relegated Sid to the Peanut Gallery as I have found his Posts to not be worth reading in any context.

I suppose he confirms that judging from your response to him.

SilsoeSid 6th Jun 2013 13:25

Sasless,
Problem is that hecklers like you, don't like being heckled back and that is why you start crying 'troll!' and pressing the 'report post' button!
http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...ons/report.gif

You want to be more equal than the rest of us, despite your contribution to this thread being more worthy of the peanut gallery than anything else up until that point. Besides, if you have 'ignored me' as you have previously declared, how did you know Far was referring to my post?

Gotcha!
Deep down, you just can't resist my posts can you!!! :p

...and I know you're reading this

SilsoeSid 6th Jun 2013 18:07

Now how did the Eagled Eyed Crewman tweak to their being "Junior Medical Staff"?
Maybe because of one obvious reason. Senior medical staff don't live in the junior doctors accommodation, (signposted on site as residences), something that I expect the local paramedics & eagle eyed helicopter crew would know.

On this planet, 'Medical Residency' means......... :E

Best comment seen so far on the media sites;

"There are two smokescreens in this story, the one that caused the helicopter to divert and the one that is trying to hide the real story."

Sid, If a poster puts someone on their "ignore" list, quotes from that person re-posted by others will be seen, but not the original posts.

Which ties in exactly with what SASless just wrote.

SASless 6th Jun 2013 20:06

Thankfully no one quoted him, Shy.

That sounds all well and good ShyT, however I wasn't quoted :ugh:

Doesn't it just!!!

Sadly Sid the old days of residences for juniors together with elderly ladies who brought me breakfast in bed and put flowers in the subsidised dining room are well and truly over. Hospital accommodation has a pot pourie of staff, mostly not doctors.

Apart from only being available to employees of the hospital, the occupant enjoys the same rights as any other tenant of rented property including the freedom to burn pieces of meat in the garden.

The real question is why, if it really did prevent the helipad being used, some idiot built it so close to a 'private' garden. Surely these poor doctors should complain about these noisy machines stopping them sleeping after working for 160 hours a week

SilsoeSid 7th Jun 2013 10:18

I think we all realise that it would more than likely have been a case of, "Look at those people over there having a BBQ", and it subsequently being reported that they were junior doctors, rather than; "Look at those junior doctors over there having a BBQ".

Further to the timings of the event;
The incident took place as the patient was being taken to Lorn and Islands Hospital, Oban, at 21:00 on Thursday.

Concerns about light rather than smoke?
It'll turn out to be smoke and mirrors, you mark my words.
