Night and low visibility with fog mentioned in some press reports. Also possibly relevant are local power cuts due to downed lines.

It was probably a Bell 206 or 407.....Air Evac is one of the cheap is good Operators in the business.

Let's not Tott.....everyone of these tragedies need to be dissected and Lessons Learned published. If that results in exactly one set of eyes being opened and one person changes their ways towards a safer way of operating...then it is a good thing that results.
Yes it is appropriate we offer Condolences but this is not the proper place for that....direct contact with the family, friends, and co-workers, posting to EMS web sites, the company web site, and sending flowers or donations to the charities requested by the family are all the right thing to do. We all hate to see good folks lost in this business.....but we have to face reality....it is part of the job....all to frequently sadly. |

SAS, I said let's stick to condolences because there's nothing new about the way these crews kill themselves.
90% or more of the times there's nothing wrong with the aircraft and even though it may be too early to speculate, down deep inside we know or have a feeling for what happened, like too many times before. A Bell 206L (or any other unstabilized single for what matters) flown at night, possibly in marginal WX conditions is a disaster waiting to happen. NVGs are not of much help in cases like this. How many times have we witnessed similar accidents in commercial aviation, only to say "well I am not going to fall for a situation like that" or better yet "Wheew, that was close but now I know better". As long as the FAA allows this type of operations with this type of aircraft with marginal IFR equipment and crew proficiency training there will be blood. There's no way around it, the US EMS industry is going to remain a widowmaker. It kills more Americans in the USA than any terror, EVERY YEAR, yet since the real rulers are not the FAA or the NTSB, but the operators who own those two Federal entities and for as long as those CFOs are allowed to value their money over the lives of their employees,there will be blood.:( So you all EMS cockpit crews have my condolences, who knows which one of you is next? |

The operator's fourth fatal in six years, and they've had SIXTEEN accidents since 1997! Why do they even have a 135 certificate at this point? FAA is asleep at the wheel...

Looks as if they had made the correct decision to land (at the school) rather than push on but clipped wires on the way in. Shame they didn't make the better decision (to stay at the hospital) earlier.

Sadly....we have had a fully IFR S-76 crash....in the same week we had this VFR Only Crash. Two extremes....identical outcomes.
It is a dangerous business this Helicopter EMS flying at night in bad weather. |
