KTLA-TV Emergency landing, Hollywood
|
A Southern California news helicopter with a smoking engine had to make an emergency landing in an empty Hollywood parking lot. The Los Angeles Fire Department says the helicopter from KTLA-TV landed safely Monday evening, and the two people on board were not hurt. The smoke came from an apparent oil leak, and there was no fire. The helicopter landed in a parking lot near a senior center. Pilot Tim Lynn told his TV station that another pilot from a KCBS-TV helicopter first saw the smoke and alerted him. The smoke eventually began coming into the cockpit, but Lynn was able to maintain good control of the helicopter. Lynn says he first considered landing in a high school football stadium before spotting the empty lot. |
wild guess
oil seal inside turbine?
|
no leak from the seal inside. Lots a smoke rt side out of engine compartment not out of exhaust stack, cracked pressure line or cap off oil tank:ouch:

Had similar while slinging breeze blocks in a Bolkow off Le Casquets light in Channel Islands. First I knew about was a slurry of oil down front and side windscreens while pulling up with a load. Only option was to ditch in nasty sea state or take the load to Alderney which was 2 minutes away and with no CWP alerts that's what we did. Apparently the veiw of us landing on terra firma was spectacular
IIRC, it was a bearing failure on the cooling fan that caused all the oil from the gearbox to spurt out everywhere, but the grey cells are shrinking. :{ |
And an outstanding contribution to rotary aerodynamics ...
What sensational visualisation of the flow through the rotor system and the interactions with TR. :8:8:8
